If your desktop is old you need to install the dvd bios update (usually from dvd manufacturer site). If your pc is new check the connections of the dvd driver. Be sure that the DVD is connected in the right way (or as a master or as slave depending of your pc connections.)

I have a compaq presario SR1720NX PC Desktop. My CD/DVD+RW drive went out. I had someone put me another one in, but I donot have the part number for it. Could you please tell me what the part number...

You can fit any CD/ DVD rom to your PC. If the front of the PC has a moulded front, where the flat CDrom front does not appear to fit, the plastic front on the CDrom is held in place with 4 plastci clips and that can be popped off easily.

Tip

Create a Shortcut or Hotkey to Eject the CD/DVD Drive

Create a Shortcut to Eject the CD/DVD Drive
Right-click on the desktop or elsewhere and choose New \ Shortcut.
In the location box, put the full path to the nircmd.exe file that you downloaded, and append the "cdrom open" command to the end of it, adjusting the drive letter to match your disc drive:
"C:\path\to\nircmd.exe" cdrom open D:
Note the location of the quotes.. if you are using a path with spaces in it, you need to make sure the quotes are only around the path to the executable, and the arguments should be placed after the quote.
Give the shortcut a meaningful name, like Eject CD or something like that, and you'll have a new icon (read below on how to use the cd-rom icon as shown)
Create a Shortcut to Close the CD/DVD Drive
You can follow the same exact instructions as above, but instead of "cdrom open" just substitute "cdrom close".
Assign a Hotkey to the Shortcut
Now that we have a shortcut, we can assign a hotkey to the shortcut by right-clicking on the icon and choosing Properties. On the Shortcut tab you'll see a place to assign the Shortcut key:

The cd/dvd tray does not open.what is the problem and how do i rectify this?

1) use a paperclip to "force" it open by opening the clip, then inserting one end into the little hole and pressing...
2) while it's coming out, see if the faceplate binds on anything
3) if it's not binding, it's probably the drive motor. Pick up a replacement internal DVD-RW and swap it out...it's very easy!

Quick instructions on how to swap out a CDROM/DVD drive:
1) Turn off the machine
2) Take off the cover
3) Disconnect the power connector and the data ribbon cable from the CDROM drive
4) Undo the screws (or tabs) holding the CDROM in place
5) Slide the drive out the front
6) Slide the replacement unit back into place, after confirming the jumper placement for standalone/slave/etc.
7) Put the screws back in (or the tabs click in place)
8) Plug in the cables, being sure to line it up correctly
9) Put the cover back on and get it going!

Can't copy dvd or cd , the cd rom drive would not recognize any cd's

it's possible that the CDROM drive is bad. Since it's an IDE device, it would be easy to replace. Simply get another DVD-RW device (might as well upgrade!) and open the case. Needless to say, you want the machine off for this process.

Open the case, disconnect the power and data cables from the back of the CDROM. Unscrew the holding screws and slide out the drive. Replace the drive with the DVD-RW, line it up and replace the screws. Then connect the data and power cables...be careful with the data cable to make sure that you don't "miss" a row of pins.

Put the case back together and turn on the machine. XP should automatically recognize the drive.

CDROM won't spin...computer says it's not ready...is it broken and where can I get a new one.

Any decent computer shop or Radio Shack will supply you with a CD-Rom

They are very cheap now

I would go for a DVD burner combo again you are talking very little in the way of cash

Driver needed for TSST Corp CDDVDW TS-H653N

Download it from
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YX4P99CU

would suggest, personally, to download that driver [File Version: 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101.2205) file, and use that file to overwrite the driver on your system, seeing as my drive functions. The file source can be located at: C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/cdrom.sys

That is what I'm showing as the latest driver at the moment. Hopefully that will be of some help.

Dvd-cdrom plays music-cd.Not dvd-cd :No Valide Drive/Disc Found

Simply change the ROM to DVD RW drive since this is an old PC and now days nobody uses a dvd rom but a dvd writer. It will be worth it since it can do all the functions and is also more hardy........sodeep

Sorry for the delay in help. If you haven't gotten your pc running yet i suggest you check the cpu. It sounds like it is over heating.
