Question about Ryobi 30 Cubic Centimeter Curved Shaft Gas Trimmer

Open Question

Ryobi string trimmer

Whenever I "bump" the trimmer to advance the line, the entire line unwinds around the shaft and stalls the engine. I put in a new reel thinking that that was the problem but it wasn't. Nothing appears to be worn or broken. Any suggestions??

There is a little white ring that goes over the line and into the opening on the tank. This is what seals the line so the gas won't leak out. They are about $1.00 at any small engine service shop.

You should have 2 small adjuster screws next to each other on top of the carb.Try adjusting each of them a little with a thin screwdriver as the engine is running.Put strimmer on the ground first and adjust screws while you are revving engine until it runs correctly.Trial and error and very small adjustments can make quite a difference.Hope this helps.

LINE REPLACEMENT (Fig. 8) (For Reel EasyTM Head) Use 2.4mm monofilament string. Use original manufacturer's replacement string for best performance. n Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire. n Cut one piece of string approximately 7.6m in length. n Rotate knob on string head until line on knob aligns with arrows on top of string head. n Insert one end of string into eyelet located on the side of the string head and push until string comes out through eyelet on the other side. Continue to push string through the string head until the middle section of the string is inside the string head and string outside the string head is evenly divided on each side. n Rotate the knob counterclockwise on the string head to wind the string. Wind the string until approximately 20cm remains protruding from the string head. INSTALLING STRING IN PRO CUT II STRING HEAD Use monofilament string between 2.4 mm and 2.7 mm diameter. Did you wind in the new string in the correct direction? The string should be wound in the SAME direction that the head spins.

I was given a used 31cc trimmer but can't get the spool off to replace it. how do i do this?

A typical trimmer has a small bump knob, an inner spool with the plastic string wound on it and the housing for that which is the string head.To remove the small bump knob, hold string head firmly and turn the bump knob counterclockwise. To remove the head entirely, first remove the bump knob. Next, remove the inner spool with string. What should be left is the spring with the end of the gear shaft showing. Some heads are locked on and some just slip over the end of the shaft. Check the gear drive just above the string head for any holes in the collar. An object can be placed in one of the holes to lock the drive and twist the head off.Ryobi's use retaining clips on the shaft which have to be removed.

I have a cs30 ryobi weedeater and something in the shaft is causing the weedeater to either stall out or completely shut off, how can i fix this problem?

Usually this is a fuel supply problem. It can be caused by a cracked fuel line, debris in the fuel tank of in the tank to carb fuel connection. If you have a primer bulb a pin hole in the primer bulb or (if so equipped) the line that goes to the primer bulb it will do the same thing. Small air leaks will cause the trimmer to run fine at idle but anytime you demand more speed it just will not speed up or it will stall. Additionally the diaphragm in the carb can also have a small hole or tear in it. (Located under the 4 small screw plate on the carb)

A problem in the shaft is rare unless the shaft itself breaks or the internal flexible drive shaft has a partial break and the spring material is unwinding. If this is the case the flexible drive shaft will have to be replaced. It requires removal of the engine from the curved shaft assy to replace. Once the engine is removed the shaft is supposed to just pull out. WHen installing a new shaft you must make sure the 4 sided drive spline drops into the string head or you an not install the engine correctly. The same goes for the engine to shaft mating area. Align the 4 sided spline.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

How do u remove the bump feed spool from the bump feed string head on my ryobi gas trimmer

Grasp the outer portion of the cutting head in your left hand and turn the inner knob with your right. Depending on model, some bump knobs are threaded and some are post and notch. Use a little spray like wd40 to loosen the mechanism. It may take a firm hand, but the two will separate so that you can reload the line. Consider reloading with the .095 five sided line. It cuts much easier than the round line.

Ryobi Trimmer

To install string in the Ryobi you do not have to disassemble anything: Line up the two arrows on the inner and outer reel, remove any excess string, cut two pieces of string about 10 feet, feed line in the side holes, secure line in hole where it comes out the bottom (it only takes about 1/4in. to do so), pull strings tight, then turn the inner reel counter clockwise to wind it. If it sticks a little just pull line a little.
To remove the inner spool in order to remove line that has broken inside, to clean the mechanism, or to perform other maintenance, grasp the outer reel and unscrew the bump knob counter-clockwise. Mine is often very tight and requires pliers to get enough leverage. While you are in there, clean the inner reel and the inside of the outer reel to improve feed performance. The shaft rarely needs cleaning. Do not lubricate. After re-installing the reel, add string (0.080") as described above.
