I have a HP Pavilion zt1000 and neither my internal or external mic work. I have gone through everything possible with no avail. The mic is turned on,the volume is set high. I did the recording test no luck. I would certainly appreciate any suggestions you can give me.

Your mic should me on automatically once you have an application the needs its use eg: sykye, and VoIP applications, else you can check to see if your internal mic is set as your default recording device and the level of the volume. You can do this in Control Panel > Sounds > Recording

I have a Toshiba Satellite L455 and don't think I have an internal microphone. Can I add one internally?

All laptops have a built in mic already. Not all have webcams though. You can always add an external usb mic if you'd like. There is most likely no extra plugin slots for extra devices.
