There is a small step whic you should try.
Right Click MY COMMPUTER>Open Properties>Hardware>Device Manager

Scrol down and click the + sign on the universal serial Bus controller

Right click on USB Root HUB and select uninstall.
Uninstall all the USB Root Hubs.

Windows thinks your external is a cdrom for some reason or another.

Right click my computer and choose manage. Scroll down to disk
management. Look for the drive in the lower right. See if it is comming
up as a cdrom or disk drive.

If it is comming as a cdrom right click the drive and choose update driver.

Also try going to device manager (you can do this from the manage
screen also). Expand the disk drives and cdroms - find the drive in
question. Right click and choose remove/uninstall.

Eject the device using the little green arrow in the task bar.

Reinsert using a different USB port.

When the auto run comes up choose do nothing.

Open windows explorer (win key + E) clcik the drive on the left. check
the drive for any auto run files, config files, ect. There may be
something copied to it or installed on it that is making windows think
    it is a cdrom.

If nothing is present - you'll want to try and remove your data from it.

The manufacturer should have a utility to rebuild or reinitialize the
drive on thier website. After everything is done copy your data back.

Some good data removal tools are

    testdisk

Sandisk micro 2 gb not recognised on win xp laptop works on other machines. pls help

Sometimes windows XP doesn't install the driver to recognize your USB ports. For example, a fresh install of XP does not contain any driver for sound or graphics. The best way is to update your windows XP up to Service Pack 3 by installing SP1 and SP2... etc, it will take a looooooooong time, but your PC would be better.
To check whether or not you have any USB drivers install just go to control panel and then device manager. Look for Universal Serial Bus (USB)

On some computers the output power of the USB ports is too low to drive the Ext. HDD.

Have you tried other USB ports on your computer?

Get yourself a powered USB hub and try that, borrow one if possible, if that works get one for yourself....

Maxtor Basics 320 GB external harddrive cant be recognized

There's a good chance the shop you bought the drive from didn't have SP3 installed. For some reason, SP3 has an issue with USB peripheral devices. Windows has created a patch to rectify the problem. Click on the link below and install the "Fixit" patch to enable your PC to recognize your HD. Best of luck.

Maxtor Basics portable 320gb Mac to pc compatability problems

Hi Tys,

I had a similar issue with my Maxtor Basics portable 500GB drive. I hadn't formatted mine yet, but had heard there were issues, so decided to find out before I start. I even saw your post here looking for an answer. Finally, one of my friends told me the following solution, which worked fine for me:

Don't format the drive as any of the Mac OS Extended options, simply reformat it as MS-DOS (it should be one of the options in Disk Utilities when you choose Erase and go to the Volume Format dropdown list).

Your Mac should be able to recognise and use the drive in this format and it works for PCs. Transferring files between the two shouldn't be a problem.

A thing to note, though, is that these Maxtor drives apparently come ready-formatted as MS-DOS (mine did). But while my Mac recognised the drive, I couldn't copy files on to it. If this happens, erase this MS-DOS formatting with... MS-DOS. Don't ask me why this works, I'm not a Mac Genius, but now my Maxtor is trouble-free and can transfer files from PC to Mac and back again.

Hope this works out for ya!

K

External hard drive not recognised on my ps3??

Ok. Well this is easy! your hard drive is formatted in NTFS, ps3 wont recognize that. it needs to be fat32 find an XP machine not a vista machine.

download Swiss Army Knife and format the drive in fat32. you will loose ALL information in your external. you will need to back up anything you want to save and put it back after the format.

good luck!

My pc dose not come up my maxtor basics external desktop hard drive

What OS are you using? Windows 98SE does not always recognize exterrnal hard drives. Try the external HD on a computer running Windows XP and see if that works. If it works on WinXP and not Win98SE or possibly WinME the External HD is good.
