SOURCE: Vaillant combi boiler problem
when the tap is turned on and the water light on the boiler doesn't this means the diverter valve is not operating it could be down to low water pressure in the house this can be checked at the cold tap in the kitchen. if there is plenty of pressure then it could be the diagphram in the diverter valve is worn or split. the diagphram is only a few pounds but it depends on the engineer you get as to how much money he wants to fit it.
the egg timer symbol (or two pyramids together) is an ignition indicator turn off and on again to see if it will fire with the tap running. reset the boiler with the lower right hand control knob.

SOURCE: We have a Halstead Ace
You need to get a qualified 'Gas Safe' engineer to check the Venturi in the flue, and clean it out. The other thing to look at is the igniters, clean them wirth emery paper as this boier relies on flame rectification (ignite and sense flame)
The other important aspect which also hasn't been mentioned is to check the inlet and working pressure (as i have had a faulty gas meter governor before)
Quite often the simple faults are overlooked and everyone goes for the PCB, It is doubtful it's a loose wire on the gas valve, The best advice is to get a gas engineer in and for him to call Halstead while on site.
Be very careful when working on your own gas boiler, as any mishaps, and your house insurance is void.

Can you please get a part number? I t might be on the outside of the unit. If not, you'll need to remove the front covers. There should be a nameplate with a model number, serial number, amp, volts, and other info. Let me know what that says.
