You can turn the unit around backwards and find three integrated clips holding the front cover on.I use a flathead screwdriver to disengage the clips and the front cover just slips out.
I use a vacuum and windes on thr blade surface.
saw your question and thought I'd chime in.
Good Luck!

I have an old Vornado floor fan (sits on pole which curls around to form base) and cannot figure out how to open it to clean. I've read through all the other questions, which indicate clips or screws....

Hello Johnsbrandt - I had the exact problem. As you note, the four slits are they key. They are tabs that hold the outer ring in place. Press them so that they no longer catch on the back ring, and you should be able to slide the outer ring right off. The outer ring on mine was somehow catching on the blade, plus it was dirty, so it was good to get this off. Hope this helps! Lance

When I turn on Vornado the fan blades turn slowly on all 3 speeds. The blades spins freely, no friction.

The issue may be something called a capacitor these are little boxes with two wires coming out of them these can easily be ordered online for a fair price

I have a Vornado floor f an, the blades iof which are coated with heavy dust. How do I remove the front protective screen to clean the blades.

On the model I have, the front grill just pulls off from the front; there are some tabs that you might need to release by pushing with a small screwdriver from the rear. After cleaning, just align the tabs and push it back in until they click back in and latch.

Fan is making squeeling noise when running.

After reading dozens of similar problems on here about the Vornado fans squealing (and rattling) it seems they are in need of some 3-in-1 oil for the bearings and any moving parts in and around the motor area.
Also good to keep the fan clean by wiping down and removing front grill and the fan blade...A high pressure duster or spray air canister for the motor body etc. should get out any dust inside the unit.
good luck!

How do I open to clean 600 series vornado floor fan

There are three clips the hold the grill to the cowl.
Look along the back, outer edge of the fan.
One clip at 11 o'clock, one at 2 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock.
Use a flat blade screw driver to push the 11 and 2 positions down (do 11 then do 2) and the grill should come off. The blade just pulls off. It only goes on one way (due the the "D" shaped shaft).

Vornado Circulating Fan - motor will run but blades will not turn.

Does the motor spin, but the blade is not turning?
The motor has a D shaped shaft. If the hole in the blade that the shaft goes in is rounded, then the blade will spin. In that case you need a new blade. Vornado can supply that.

We have a very old Vornado fan that works great but needs a switch. We can start/stop it by plugging it in, but would like to replace the switch. Can you tell me where I can buy one?

Is it a single speed motor? All you need is a common toggle switch with two terminals and two positions (on/off). A good hardware store or farm supply store should have these, just check the amp. rating (10 should be good enough)
Always put the switch in the hot wire, usually black, maybe the fan is old enough that it doesn't have a polarized plug. If you change the cord, switch the hot side.
