They have a throttle body fuel injected engine. If its hard starting then smokes usually that indicates pour fuel quality or something wrong with fuel system.
For automotive applications, the tenth digit is the code for year of manufacture, but automotive VINs are 17 characters in length. Try adjusting the linkage on the shifter the shifter may not be adjusted properly so the gears are not being fully engaged ,extend the linkage at least an inch or two (lengthen it)
