SOURCE: Head Bolt Torque for a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L

the torque is a 4 step process

1 torque all bolts to 22 ft/lbs
2 torque all bolts to 45 ft/lbs
3 recheck all bolts to 45 ft/lbs
4 torque bolts 1 thru 10 to 110 ft/lbs
bolt 11 to 100 ft/lbs
bolts 12 thru 14 to 110 ft/lbs
bolt #1 is the fourth bolt from the front on the passenger side....#2 is the fourth bolt on the drivers side then you continue in a clockwise order

SOURCE: replacement of a head gasket on 2.5 liter nissan altima 2002

frajogag: First off, be aware that these bolts are "torque to yield" bolts (streach bolts). What this means is that instead of torqueing the head bolts to a specific torque specification, they are torqued down to a set spec and then tightened by rotating the bolts a certain angle, like 90 degrees. and all of them are turned the same amount.
This means that the shanks of the bolts must be checked to make sure they are not too thin (or the bolt has already stretched beyond limits and is prone to snap if used)
Here is how you check the bolts. Measure the bolt using a micrometer, at the base, or within the first 13mm from the end where it threads in. Then go to about 10mm before the threads end heading toward the top of the bolt. There should not be more than a 0.23mm (.0091 inch) or less difference or the bolt should be discarded.
Torque the bolts down to 98.1Nm ( 72.ft lb)
Looking at the head from the side, so you are looking at the full length from side to side, I will number the head bolts in this fashion.
#1 & 2 are directly in front of you and in the center of the cylinder head crossing it width wise.
#3&4 are to the left of #1&2, / #5&6 are to the right of #1&2
#7&8 are to the left of #3&4 / #9$10 are to the right of #5&6
Now, you have the sequence.
After the initial pull, back off all the bolts in the same sequence and then retorque them to 36 Nm ( 28 ft lb)
Using a torque angle wrench or having the ability to accurately judge turning angles. Rotate (clockwise) to a 75 degree angle. do this to all the bolts using the sequence I had provided.
Rotate the bolts (clockwise) 75 degrees again on all bolts in the same sequence. The proceedure is complete!

1999 Jeep Grand cherokee Limited, 5.9 liter torque setting for head bolts

posted the fsm
5.9L, 1999 WJ?
check alldata.com.... it covers this engine,
buy my WJ, fsm skips the 5.9L, not sure why.
ah only the limited has that. engine.
my online links show no 5.9L. so see why you are asking here.
why not go to real jeep forum and ask.

here are the (what else) questions
are they TTY?
are the reusable.?
are the angle set.?
what is the pattern ? Sequence.
and staging levels .? (about 1./3 steps is ok)
those are always a question. and the FSM answers them all.
for your car.

if the expensive WJ (limited) FSM is too pricey, (it is)
then ask here.

one search, you can too, or better ask them.

Cylinderhead torque settings

I'm not sure what engine you have in your 95 grand am SO I will give you both the 4cyl and 6cyl Specs. Also you didn't ask for the torque sequence. I will include that as well for both. 2.3 DOHC Quad 4cyl: Torque sequence---> front ' 7 3 1 5 9 ' of engine ' 8 6 2 4 10 ' Step 1: torque bolts 1 thru 6 (26 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Step 2: torque bolts 7 & 8 (15 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Step 3: torque bolts 9 & 10 (22 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION *** This engine uses "Torque To Yield" (TTY) head bolts that means they permanently stretch during the initial installation. New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed in order to obtain proper torque. 3.1 liter V6 Torque sequence--> ' 6 2 3 7 ' ' 5 1 4 8 ' Step 1: torque bolts in sequence to 33 Ft/Lbs Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION *** This particular engine uses "Torque To Yield" head bolts(TTY) (that means the bolts permanently stretch during the initial installation.) You MUST use NEW head bolts when replacing or reinstalling the cylinder head in order to obtain the proper torque.

What is the torque specs for a 1998 jeep Cherokee classic straight 6 4.0 liter? I am replacing the head gasket and need to find the lbs of torque. Thank you for any advice, pictures, etc.

Torque sequence ------------------ front | 12 8 4 1 5 9 13 | of | | engine | 11 7 3 2 6 10 14 | ------------------ Final torque must be reached in 3 equal steps Step 1: torque all bolts (except bolt 11) to 110 Ft/Lbs Step 2: torque bolt 11 to 100 Ft/Lbs Recheck final torque in sequence.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Disconnect the hoses at the thermostat housing.
  4. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  5. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  6. Loosen the rocker arms.
  7. Remove the pushrods.

The valvetrain components must be replaced in their original positions.
  1. Remove the intake and exhaust manifold from the cylinder head.
  2. Disconnect the spark plug wires and remove the spark plugs.
  3. Disconnect the temperature sending unit wire, ignition coil and bracket assembly from the engine.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt(s).
  5. Unbolt and set aside the power steering pump and bracket. Do not disconnect the hoses.
  6. Remove the intake and exhaust manifold assembly.
  7. If equipped with A/C, perform the following:
    1. Remove the compressor and position it aside with the lines attached.
    2. Remove the compressor bracket bolts from the cylinder head.
    3. Loosen the through bolt at the bottom of the bracket.

  8. Remove the alternator.
  9. Remove the cylinder head bolts, the cylinder head and gasket from the block.

Bolt No. 14 cannot be removed until the head is moved forward. Pull the bolt out as far as it will go and suspend in place by wrapping with tape.
  1. Discard the gasket. Thoroughly clean the head-to-block mating surface.
  2. Clean and inspect the cylinder head thoroughly. Refer to the engine reconditioning portion outlined later in this section.

To install:
  1. Coat a new head gasket with suitable sealing compound and place it on the block. Most replacement gaskets will have the word TOP stamped on them.

Apply sealing compound only to the cylinder head gasket. Do not allow sealing compound to enter the cylinder bore.
