Is the software on a CD or DVD? What type of optical drive do you have in your system? Make sure your drive is able to read the type of media that the software is on, If it is and it just won't autorun then goto "my computer" and right click on the CD/DVD drive and make sure there is a check mark beside the "autorun" option.

Well how about you be more speciffic next time. You said the disc would not run, you didn't say that the CD/DVD drive does not show up on the PC. If that is the case then goto the manufacturers website and see if there is an updated driver or firmware for your device.

Somethhing got stuck in the dvd/cd burner

Many computers have a small hole in the door to the dvd/cd drive. It is the perfect size to put a paperclip into. Straighten a paperclip and poke the end into the hole, this forces the door open. Hope this helps

Inspron 530S, since power outage all USB ports are

Hope for the best and assume that some files got corrupted at the time of the power failure. So try getting into BIOS, the objective being doing something besides putting in a PCI Card with USB ports or buying another motherboard.

Shut down and/or restart the computer.

When the DELL logo appears, press <F12> immediately.

Now if the computer takes you to the BIOS we are half way there. Key board is working, motherboard is working, and USB port is working.

When the boot device list appears, highlight CD/DVD/CD-RW and press <Enter>.

1. Select the Boot from CD-ROM option from the menu that appears and press <Enter>.

2. Type 1 to start the CD menu and press <Enter> to proceed.

3.Select Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics from the numbered list.

Other wise, save and exit after step 2.

If the above (first 2) steps works, you may want to go forward.

The next part is tricky.

Get hold of a working computer with internet. open google. In the search box type puppy linux. download the latest version. It will be an iso file. Simply burn it to a CD.

Put the CD in it your computer drive (power on. immediately press the eject button of your CD Rom drive . Put the CD in . The computer boots from puppy linux. It may come up with 2 or 3 questions. Just answer yes to the default selections. If the system completes booting, you will see a perfectly usable OS. You can possible check anything you want, if you successful in getting this done.

I have a Sony Vaio desktop with XP. My DVD-CD

Have you tried burning a CD in the new drive? Because the drive is a DVD it will always be recognised as a DVD, but should work perfectly well with CDs both playing and recording.

My pc is rejecting all cd/dvd's. It was working perfectly until two days ago

Well! Beggars *CAN* be choosers!

Get a laser-cleaning CD and run that through the drive.

If you can't (or are too cheap) to get one of those, try leaving the drive-tray open overnight to see if it's just a condensation problem.

You need to install Windows. You'll have to buy a Windows XP Home (preferably) installation CD with Certificate of Authenticity and 25-digit registration key. You'll put the CD in the drive and boot the machine, it should boot off the CD and start the Windows XP installation process. Once that is done, your computer should run perfectly.
