HELP POWER FAILING!!!!

I recently started to have this problem with my gateway. The problem was gradual, but basically the computer seems to just shut off and the 3keyboard lights and the light on the power button blinks repeatedly like the computer is trying to turn back on but it goes off and back on then off again repeated. It's like if someone is playing with a light switch turning it on and off, on and off, on and off. I took it to Staples (because they say they fix computers) but they said they couldnt find anything wrong with it! They "said" they had it on over night and nothing happened. I pick it up after a couple days and it does it after being on for 5-10mins. Does anyone know what is going on with my computer?

Azkeyz has hit on the most likely problem; the power supply can cause all kinds of failures once they are on the road to complete failure in which it will not turn on at all.
If it is an ATX power supply (most common) you can buy these on eBay for under $10 US about any time:
http://shop.ebay.com/items/atx-power-supply

You will have to check the one you now have for its power rating and it is wise to buy a higher rated supply, the cost difference is minimal. If you want to pay the extra cost, you can get these from any store that deals with PCs but they often mark them up by 400-500%
If you are not familiar with the guts of a PC, you might want to take a number of snapshots once the case is open if you are confused by the array of cables, most of which cannot be incorrectly connected and are of different types and the cables that appear identical, well, they are.  Drive cables in particular can be interchanged without problem but board and fan connectors can hardly be wrongly installed; just don't force anything.

Sounds exactly like a failing power supply. Hopefully you bought an extended warranty when you purchased the computer. You should look into having the PSU replaced.

Hi, The solution to fix the problem is by changing your power supply. Just make sure that you replace it with a 500W or higher and not with the same 300W which does not have enough power for this system, plus it is defective. I have changed the power supply to 4 diferent gateway PCs same model dx4300. And all 4 are working perfect. And run a check disk on CMD to fix the disk errors that were created every time you unplugged it and turned it on again.

What are the symtoms of a failing power supply on Gateway GT4024? Thanks, JEL

Some symptoms of a failing power supply unit on this unit are, computer does not start automatically when power button is press, the place where the power supply is located is getting way to hot unlike before and then computer just shut down itself without any notice. IF you have these symptms you might want to consider already replacing the power supply on this computer.

Gateway dx 4820 power up problem

Let's start with some of the basics.

1) Since you were checking connections on the motherboard, was the power unplugged from the computer, AND did you follow Anti-Static precautions?

[Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity.
Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the hardware components inside a computer.

You may not even see it, or feel it.

Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, computer on a table.
TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case to relieve your body of Static.

Should you get up in the middle of working on your computer, and leave, upon your return Touch the metal frame again.
Or use an ESD wrist strap, and connect the alligator clip to the metal frame ]

2) Computer unplugged from power, anti-static precautions followed, remove all ram memory modules, and reinsert them. In fact, it would behoove you to clean the contact pins on the bottom of the ram memory modules, before reinserting them.

Clean with a pencil eraser. Remove the eraser dust, with air pressure from a can of compressed air for computers, or air pressure from your mouth may be sufficient.

You may have bumped the ram memory modules.
Even if they look to be seated, it only takes a few minutes to remove, and reinstall.

After time, corrosion can develop on the gold plated contact pins, at the bottom of the ram memory modules. Doesn't take long to clean them with a pencil eraser.

Handle the ram memory module by the body. The body, is coated with a clear see-through protective plastic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Generic_DDR_Memory_%28Xytram%29.jpg

The above link, is only provided for an illustration of the gold plated contact pins, I am referring to.

It is DDR Sdram ram memory, and has 184 contact pins. 92 on each side.

Your computer uses DDR3 Sdram ram memory.
Has 240 contact pins. 120 on each side, and the Locating Notch is in a different place.

3) Are you sure the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, is plugged in tightly to the motherboard?

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atx12v4

This is power for your Processor.

http://support.gateway.com/s/desktop/2009/gateway/dx/dx4820/DX4820nv.shtml

SATA power cable is plugged in tightly to your SATA harddrive?

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#sata

If your SATA harddrive has provisions for plugging in a SATA power cable, and a 4-pin Peripheral power cable, BE SURE that only the SATA power cable is plugged in.

Plugging both in will fry out the harddrive. Maybe not right away, but will down the road.

Gateway GT4022 Motherboard failed

Well, I think gateway is just a computer manufacturer, so if you are still under warranty, you could possibly get a replacement. But before doing anything, and if you are comfortable with doing so, open up the side of the casing, and take a look around, see if any cables seem unconnected.
