Problems with Inspiron 6000 CD/DVD drive

I just tried to install Quick Books on my computer via the cd drive, but it is almost as if the drive does not exist anymore. When I check administrative tools, the drive is there, but x'd out, and under properties, when i try to enable, it says the device is disabled with a code 22. when i try to enable it, the message reponds that if a device isn't working properly, or causes resource confilict, the device will be disabled. it won't let me enable to drive. i just used the cd drive the other day to load song on my ipod, so i know that it was working recently. i just don't understand what the problem is. i've already uninstalled and reinstalled the driver to see if that would help, but nothing happened.

I'll try booting it in safe mode and see if that works. i don't know what BIOS is, so if you could direct me, I'd appreciate it.

  • mandycostell Sep 24, 2008

The drive was installed when we got the computer and is not removable.

I tried the F2 setup, and I did not see the device listed at all. When I put a disc in it, it makes all of the normal sounds but nothing happens. I just find it ironic that my warranty on this laptop ended on 8/30/08 and I am suddenly having problems with a drive...

Have you tried booting into safe mode to see if the drive shows up? If it does the same thing in safe mode .. open a command prompt .. start -> run -> cmd .. and then type in chkdsk /f c: to run a chkdsk that fixes ... you'll be prompted that you can't run it cause the drive is locked .. type Y to schedule it on reboot .. reboot the machine and let it run through.

Another cause could be is it a removable drive? can it be taken out? if so then maybe it was accidently jarred loose ... shut down the machine and pop out the drive .. and then pop it back in and see if that helps.

Also check the BIOS to make sure it's being seen correctly.

When your computer first boots up .. you should see a screen with the dell logo and somewhere on the screen you'll see 'Press F2 to enter setup' .... or 'F2 - Setup' ... it may not be F2 it could be F1 or F5 .. those are the function keys .. the row of keys at the top that begin with 'F' .. when you press the correct key when that message is on the screen .. you'll have to be quick or you'll miss your chance and have to reboot the machine to try again .. it'll take you to the BIOS (Basic Input Output Setup) configuration screen.

The BIOS controls your hardware at the lowest level .. and if your drive doesn't appear in the bios configuration screen then you have a hardware error.

My bad .. Basic Input/Output System .. not setup

  • kurgan2001 Sep 24, 2008

It sounds to me then that the drive has actually failed then. I'd take it to a computer repair shop and see if they could fix it ... we've had some inspiron's here at work where the cd drive has failed but they try to read the disk. Unfortunately without the machine physically in front of me, I can't really help too much. I can only tell you what basic steps to do and I've exhausted those. Sorry .. :(

    Hey voroa,

1.) why don't you look at the driver page next time and put up the CORRECT link

2.) we established that the laptop isn't seeing the drive in the bios ... that would make windows drivers USELESS.

correct link btw is ..http://www.notebookera.com/notebook-driv... and there isn't anything there about cd drivers.

Try running diagnostics on your computer to seeif you have a hardware problem. You should have a CD that came with thecomputer that has "Diagnostics and Utilities" listed under contents.Boot form this CD and run the extended diagnostics.
If you don't have the CD you can go to www.support.dell.com andselect "Drivers and Downloads". Enter the "service tag" (serialnumber) of the computer. You can then download "Diagnostics" .
To boot from a CD disk, power on your computer and tap the key tobring you to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD into the top CD/DVD driveand then select "Boot from CD/DVD" and hit key. Select the"Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics.

0F00:136C IDE device failed:blank media or no media is present in optical drive

read failure of the CD\DVD drive. If you were running diagnostics and have no readable media in the drive, that is a NORMAL result.
If you have readable media in the drive, try reseating the drive and try to read again. If the media is not a factory burned CD, try a factory burned one.
See if you can boot to an Windows CD.
If all the above fail, then likely a drive failure, replace the drive

Dell Inspiron 600 - trying to reload, but not

You might need to go into the computer's BIOS and see if it's set to boot from a bootable CD or USB device. If it's set to only boot from the hard drive, it won't even look at other drives. Different computers use different ways to access the BIOS: you might try pressing the F12 key when the boot logo appears. Check your owner's documentation - it should tell you the procedure for your computer.

My disk drive is not working i am trying to down load a new program and when i put the disk in it will read it and then error appears

Hi saratrought, if Windows XP runs and you have read problems in CD/DVD drive try to read another disk, if any other disk work fine then you need to copy your CD/DVD info (or program) in another new disk.

Or just use Windows Explorer to try copy all data from CD/DVD disk to a New Folder in your Hard Drive and then from that location you can try to install your program, if your data don´t copy well then again i tell you that it´s your disk not your CD/DVD drive.

Sorry by bad english.

Try cleaning the CD, first. If still a problem, the CD may be bad - try in another computer to test.

Dvd cd writer does not detect disc in drive when i want to burn

Sometimes you need to have a burning software like nero or roxio, if you want to get music from an audio cd you can use rip by going to the windows media player but if not tell me what kind of software you are using for copying.

My DVD Rom wont open

You can get the DVD out by putting a pin into the little hold on the other side of the eject button. Try putting an audio CD into the drive and see if it recognizes it. If it won't see anything and there's no light, it's probably broken and time for a trip to the computer repair shop of your choice.
