TV turns on only after disconnecting convergence cable to red yoke
(Philips 50PP920217) Bought this TV at an auction so I have no clue what it was doing before it messed up. When I first bought it it was turning on for 6-10 secs then it would shut off (display was white while it was on)
Componets that have been replaced and order in which they were installed, with testing between each new componet. MC44603AP IC - 7302 15ohm Resister - 3306 6.8ohm Resisters - 3150 and 3149 STW13NB60 Transistor - 7301 (After disconnecting the convergence amps this blew) MC44603AP IC - 7302 (AGAIN, damage from voltage arcing 7301) STK392-120 IC's - 7044 and 7045 Snubber Resister 100ohm - 3165 and 3162
Now after all of the new parts the TV will ONLY turn on if the red yoke convergence cable is disconnected (Connector 1005) The TV works perfectly at this point except for the red is off and the snubber resistor 3165 and 3162 overheat)
With the red convergence yoke plugged in the TV will power up for about 1 sec until the relay is shut off.
The actual yoke on the tube has been tested and is ok. All components located between the convergence amps (STK392-120, 7044 and 7045) and the connector for the red convergence yoke (1005) have been tested.

Re: TV turns on only after disconnecting convergence...
Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.
Common Symptoms include....
TV turns on only after disconnecting convergence c - 2_bing.gif"h_mi">Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
photos of convergence problems.
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.
TV turns on only after disconnecting convergence c - 2_bing.gif't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
Note: If you TV has as flashfocus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution
You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Symptom: Unit appears to have poor convergence due to: 1. cross hatch appears tilted 2. one color (or more) being larger than the others.
Cause: The yoke or yokes may have: (1) rotated slightly or (2) slipped down during transport.
Resolution: Loosen a yoke and lower to inspect the tape. If black tape is present remove it from under all yokes (white tape or no tape is OK). Slide yoke or yokes up tight against the CRT and tighten to prevent slipping or rotation. Precede with alignments and or convergence as necessary.
1) Convergence chips are shorted....One quick test is to desolder and remove both STK392 chips....then power the set on. If the tubes light up the chips were shorted. You can get new ones from www.TvRepairKits.com
2) Another possible problem is a bad HVG - AKA the flyback.
Try the convergence chip test first. Note: On some Philips sets you can just unplug cable "1516" instead of removing the chips.
For instructions on how to find/remove cable 1516 visit the website listed above and click on their tips page. On that page click on the "Magnavox DPTV3xxx Checks" link.
Look for the STKICs mounted on 2 big heatsinks.
I would suggest to replace both of them once you have the TV taken apart.
I think the part markings are STK392-040.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
are you sure it's yoke? these are know for bad convergence amp ic's other wise it's a screw and glue holding the yoke in place loose the screw and try to break the glue with out breaking the plastic on the yoke, the other thing you can do is adjust the magnets which have tabs on the yoke. i would mark the position's of everything on the tube with a sharpie so you can get it back to start.

Jennifer, adjusting it won`t fix it, the convergence IC`s have failed, major job to get them out and unless you have tv tech skills with soldering equipment and volt meter you`ll have to call a tech for this one , sorry to be the bearer of bad news, BMW Rider
This might be something really simple... In a large number of DPTV310 chassis, of which this TV is, the yoke connections where put in place with black electrical tape just below the retaining rings. Job is to loosen the rings, remove the tape and push the yoke back in place and tighten down retainer.. Be careful not to throw off the tilt of the yoke.
The adhesive on the tape, over time, gets hot so many time it becomes slippery and allows the yoke to fall away from it's position dulling the look of the image (or focal length) causing the problem you're describing here...
It also throws off the convergence - so in attempting to converge it just looks worse.
