Purchased a gigaware cat5e crossover network cable to transfer files from one older computer to a new one. Cant get it to tranfer info.

So that you will be able to transfer your file from one PC to the other you have to share your folder first.
1. Share your folder in your old computer. Right click the folder then click Properties and Choose Sharing Tab. Check Share this folder (For windows 7 or vista you have to click Advance sharing button first) 2. Open your explorer from the other computer and Choose Network. Now, you should see the shared folder where your files are. Then start copying the files to your new computer.
*Note: you can also delete the files from the other computer by setting permission of the folder properties.

Have Desktop & Laptop that use the same Router & Modeum to access the Internet with no trouble, However I cannot get the 2 computers to talk to each other,ie, cannot view file or transfer file from...

Hi, If you want to share files on both computers, you need to check the shared folders option on both version of the operating system. You can right-click on the folder you want to share then choose properties and choose shared option to check both settings. On windows 7, you have to go to Network and Sharing Center to check the setting on your option. you have to to turn on the sharing options and also if there is a password on both computer when you log on , that would be the username and password you need to share the documents.
Thank you for using Fixya, your recommendation is highly appreciated for the free support.

Is it possible to connect my ASUS X58C laptop to a Win98SE pc

Connect the two computers using the Ethernet crossover cable.
On the computer running Windows Vista, from the Start menu, click Control Panel. Then, double-click Network and Sharing Center. Note: If this doesn't match what you see, switch yorur control panel to classic view..
At the top of the main portion of the Network and Sharing Center window, double-click the Unidentified Network icon.

If network discovery and file sharing are disabled, the following message will appear:
"Network discovery and file sharing are turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible. Click to change..."

Click the message to enable network discovery and file sharing; you may be prompted for an administrator username and/or password.

In the dialog box that opens, select No, make the network that I am connected to a private network. This allows you to initiate file sharing on the two computers without affecting the settings for any other networks.

Icons for both computers should now be visible in the Network window. Double-click a computer icon to share printers and other resources.

My Advent 4211 netbook connects wirelessly to the Internet through my Desktop and a Belkin router. How do I allow the netbook to see the files in the desktop?

if you ran your network wizard to get the internet access shared then you should be able to share your files too.
and folders the same way ,

go to my network device,
veiw network computers,
if you can see the computers desk top then
go to Shared folders and try to see if your folders have been shared open something.

If you can see the desktop and not open the shared folders then run the network wizard again, shutdown and restart,to save your settings,
to share files between both machines you will need to drag the file into my shared folders or rightclick on the file your sharing and click on sharing, follow the prompts to share and that should fix your problem.

Please rate me thanks MISTERDJ

I have a d link DES-1105. cant get more than one computer to work on hub/switch.

Hi!
Unfortunately, hubs or switches cannot be use to share internet access specially if it's connected to a modem. To share internet access, you will need a router. If you prefer not to use a router, you can enable ICS (Internet Connection sharing) on one PC and share internet access to the others. However, the PC that will share internet access will need two ethernet cards (or LAN cards).

Your setup will look like this:

d591ad0.png
If internet is not a concern, and you just want to connect the computers to share files and resources, you will have to se your computers to static IP. You do not need any additional device - just connect your computers to the hub, setup a static IP on all the computers.

If you need further assistance setting up static IP on the computers, please reply and I'll give you the step by step instruction for that.

For any setup, a router will be the best option.

I hope that helps.

Good luck and have a nice day!

Computer sharing

Hi,

Initially, I would suggest that you:
1. Make both members of the same workgroup;
2. verify that the Subnet Mask are identical to both PCs in their networking configuration; and
3. verify that the Folder or files are shared by viewing the folder or files properties making making sure that there is a check mark on "Share this folder on the network and/or "Allow network users to change my files".

Should the above be not corrective of your concern, pls post back.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back as requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Help please....printer name does NOT appear

You must have a network set up, and you must enable file and printer sharing on the desktop. The laptop and the desktop should be in the same workgroup. Some firewalls will cause this problem.
Start with the network setup wizard in Settings/Network.
