Compaq C502US Laptop Won't Boot LEDs flash

I have a Compaq Presario C502US laptop that will not boot. The minute I plug it into the a/c adapter the red charge led rapidly flashes (looks like some sort of blink pattern). When I hit the power switch the power light on the switch blinks on and off rapidly and then one of the volume led's flicker.

I checked the CMOS battery and it's fine and the a/c adapter is putting out the right voltage.

With the battery (which has no charge now) plugged in, the led charging light flashes (same pattern) and the fan kicks in for a second and then cut's off and it still won't boot. Without the battery inserted nothing but the led flash pattern happens as already described. The laptop will not boot w/ or w/o the battery inserted and the a/c (brand new) adapter plugged in.

My Compaq C502us wont boot. The power light will flash and then stop. When I unplug the power from the computer and plug it back is it will try to start. The lightning icon in front is on now like it is charging. A few times I got it to start far enough that it told me I had a checksum error. I even got into the bios a few times tried to checkthe hard drive but than it stopped. Twice I got to the logon screen, but when I tried to logon it stopped. I reseated the ram, sometimes it would start with thw checksum error than, but the comp would inevitably stop again. Is the ram bad is the power connectoe to the Mother board bad. Is the motherboard bad? The hard drive was replaced recently and things were initially good, but soon degraded.

Turn it off, pull the battery from the bottom, and try it again... chances are, the power adapter is not rated properly for the notebook, or the battery is dead and won't hold a charge anymore, in which case, recycle the battery.

Hi, most HPs or Compaqs or any laptop for that matter, you can access the boot menu by pressing F12, or F10, or F1. You could see it on the screen rigth after you boot the machine, but it goes really quick, so you have to be aware. I hope this helps

My laptop will not start

OK. When the AC adapter is plugged in the computer should boot and stay on. Most likely the adapter has malfunctioned or the female connector has come loose from the mother board ( a common problem with all laptops). Check your adapter by measuring the output voltage with a voltmeter, taking it to a repair shop, or using it on another computer. If it is bad, get another, if not, disassemble the laptop and resolder the power connector to the board. Test it before complete reassembly and glue the connector to the board with a few tiny spots of five-minute epoxy. The 5 minute stuff is easy to remove with heat if need be. You can find assembly instructions for your laptop on C-net. Repost this if you need more instructions and I will guide you through it.
Good luck to you.

Motherboard issues

If you have an external monitor available, connect your laptop to it and start the machine. It would not start and shutoff if the motherboard was failing. It would not power at all or would turn on a display an error, with some beeps. By plugging into the ext monitor, you can amke sure this is not a video problem and watch it boot, until it gets to the error, which is probably a Windows Blue Screen.
