Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Refrigerators used in a garage

We are looking for a new EXTRA refrigerator. Currently we have an older one that is about ready to die.
Question; We heard the new refriges have sensors that shut down at about 45 degrees. We live in Ohio and the garage is insulated but not heated. Temps get to about 85 to 90 degrees in the dead of summer and roughly aboput 35 to 40 in the dead of winter.

Can you think of anything to be able to use in the garage due to storage space situations?

thanks, Paul

Hi pdpup,
Welcome to fixya.com.
I have the solution!
I'm Huuum, at your service

I just got back from our buying groups Sept. appliance show where we saw the answer to all these refrigerators that can not be in the winter garage any more.
Frigidaire just came out with a convertible upright 17cu. ft. freezer/ refrigerator.
All year it is a refrigerator and just before it gets real cold you convert it to a freezer with a touch of a button until spring.
Model # FKCH17F7HW
We should be able to get it soon.
A couple of weeks I was told!
It is not in their web site yet but I saw it in action and I believe that Frigidaire is the only on at the moment that makes this!
You can call them and track the stock and when it will be in your area!

Now that's service,

Thank you for using our service
.
Please remember to give me a solved rating before you sign off!

Have extra older Frig in th garage Mod 596.72232200

Sounds like a intermittent problem with the defrost timer. Sometimes they get stuck. Check continuity of the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. If both are good then replace the defrost timer, that should solve the problem.

It could be a problem depending on how cold your garage gets in the winter. Most refrigerators depend on the compressor turning on to cool the freezer section and that cold air is used to cool the refrigerator section. If your the temperature in your garage gets in the 30-40 degree range in the winter. The compressor may not turn on sufficiently since the refrigerator is typically around the 35-40 degree range. This will cause the freezer to warm up to the fridge temperature and your freezer items will defrost.

most (not all) f/f can be used in ambient temps from about +5C to +35C,but use a seperate thermometer to keep the interior temps at +5C for a fridge and -18C for a freezer.

Yes there is another option. Or I should say was. Many of the units in campers used propane or natural gas. Other than that there is only the older R12 units and the newer R134.

Refrigerator/freezer in garage not freezing

Most refrigerator Manufactures have tested these machines in hot and cold weather and weather will effect operation and electricity consuption.
As far as cold weather goes It would run much better in cold weather than hot. As far as it being in the garage : It will wear on it faster. The humidity is not good on them and they get more dirt through the system and will need its normal mantenance more often. not to mention bugs and rodents like to find a warm place to hid with fee dinking water and a refrigerator provides that for them.

All of the new one will not work well in a garage. Your best bet will be a unit that is more than 7 years old. If you cant find one try a Hotpoint, this is GEs little brother. The hotpoints have an older design. I use one in my garage Model # HTS18GBSWW You should be able to find this at any appliance store around $500.

I just want to know how much energy my Kenmore Side by Side uses

Newer refrigerators are more energy efficient than a 10 year old unit.

Look for a unit with an "Energy Star" rating. However, this rating is achieved by adding insulation to the box and the doors. If you look at a new unit, you will see that the doors and sides are thicker than your older unit. This is good and bad. Good becasue it will use less energy. Bad due to the extra bulk and space the unit will take up. You may also lose some storage space inside the refrigerator.
