Hello, I've had my Inspiron for about 3 and a half years and just recently when I put a cd into the drive to play music of burn a cd it never registers that there is a cd in there. I'm really frusterated and tried to reinstall the driver with the software Dell sent me but when I put the disk into the drive nothing happens. Help!
If you have any windows cd sent by Dell together with your system when you first purchased it, try booting on it by doing this---> Press F12 as soon as you see the Dell Logo, then select onboard/CD Rom or anything that says CD/DVD on the option by pressing enter. If you're being asked, press any key to continue -> Press spacebar immediately. This will load to the window setup. If you have reached the menu option that says:
1. Press Enter to install Windows
2. Press R for Recovery
3. Press F3 to quit
Press Enter to enter the setup. Then if you were able to reach the license agreement asking you to press F8, that means that your CD rom drive is working as designed. I can assume that the reason why the CD rom drive is not reading any media is because of a possible filter issue on the registry.
Let me know first if the steps I have provided you worked. Good Luck!

I have a similar problem. I was able to copy files to CD before (last year, I do not use this often), watch DVD movies. I just tried to copy files to a blank CD or insert a music CD to play, it just does not recognize the CD at all. However, I can still put in a DVD & play it.
