What OS controls the bootloader? Is it linux or Windows? I had the same problem when i deleted ubuntu, the bootloader remains and i cannot boot windows. I then placed the windows CD and loaded recovery console. Im not sure of the command but I think it was "fixMBR" or something similar. Just type help for the commands.

Booting problen

first off does it come up with any error messages like no MBR found or no HDD found

if so install Knoppix cd or dvd version to a disk or a usb.
if you are unsure how to install knoppix to disk download universal usb installer and select the knoppix iso image.

once you've done that go into the bios and change the first boot device to either the CD/DVD or USB if it boots from either than your PC is fine you will need to reinstall the OS or replace HDD.

if you can see HDD in knoppix there is no reason to Replace HDD

if you cant boot to either of these try taking one stick of ram out and swap them between dimm slots

Format my note book

Hello, At first, you need to install OS. When Acer is starting up press F2, and you are in setup. Go to Boot tab, than make your first boot drive CD, by pressing F6 - for up, or F5 for down. Then put your CD with OS in drive and restart. When it says press any key to boot from CD, do it. After that OS setup will start, and then follow the instructions. I suggests you to split your HDD on 2 partition (C:/ and D:/), and then install OS on C:. When your OS has been installed go to http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx and download needed drivers for your notebook.

Trying to load packard bell ,its formated hard drive ,next screen i have c:\ what do i put to continue

The system is trying to boot from the C drive i,e, the HDD, you need to continue after formatting from the CD/DVD.

Presumable it initially booted from the disk and you went through the procedure wizard of telling the computer to install a fresh copy of the operating system deleting any existing operating systems, and you didn't ask it to partition the disk and retain the OS that was originally on the HDD.

After formatting it should continue to install the OS on the drive you specified from the CD/DVD disk.

Start again you have nothing to lose as the HDD is now formatted and all previous information is lost, but this time read the screens that come up carefully.

One final point you did put the disk in then power up the computer didn't you????? not put the disk in and try and re install.

The computer has to be booted from the disk.

Missing operating system

Guess that the OS in ur system had got erased/corrupted. This is probably because of the HDD failiure or bad sectors in it. Try reinstalling the OS using the respective CD. Just put the OS inatallation CD in the drive, change the boot sequence to Cd drive and boot ur system..you will be lead to the OS installation...CArryon the on-screen instructions..

Boot from CD ROM by inserting your original OS CD and just repair the existing installation of the OS and keep other settings at system default level. After that F8 will work for starting-up in Safe Mode...sodeep

Missing operating system

missing operating system message usually means that your HDD is pooched, or corrupted
check your bios settings to check that it can still "see your HDD"

if you can hear your hard drive going "click, click, click" when attempting to boot, that is usually a bad sign

to perform setup use orignal recovery setup disk or OS disks of your choice (BOOT from CD) to install OS from scratch.
