SOURCE: Computer not booting to Windows and sometimes freezes

hiya

this cud be many causes, a corrupt driver or overheating
try booting into safe mode to find out if it is a driver or software issue, if it does not then i wud suggest checking your cpu fan is working as you say it shuts itself off.....as new cpu's have a thermal protection built into them to stop the from cooking.....

let me know if you have any joy

Installing windows vista and it freezes during expanding files, sometimes get as far as 72% and then stops

I have vista on a laptop and it is the worst os that windows ever made. So I'm assuming you got this for free and that is why you are installing it. One problem I noticed continually with vista is that it is such a processor hog that it would shut my laptop off every time it was running any program that required a lot of loading files. So maybe this initial installation...especially if this is a laptop, is the processor is going extra slow because of heat.
O don't know your physical location...but to rule out heat based freezing of vista, try to do the install after the computer has been sitting completely off for a night. The best thing would be to take it outside or in the garage if it is below 40F or so and do the installation in the coldest weather possible.
If the installation still freezes and you are certain it isn't related to an overheated processor, try reformatting the harddrive ( assuming you are doing a clean install) and start the vista install from the boot up off the dvd

How to reformat back to windows vista ?

You need a windows Vista disc. Insert the disc and follow the prompts. I would format the hard drive instead of upgrading do a new install. The best way would be to go into your bios and make sure the boot device order has the cd-rom booting before the hard drive. Then put the disc in and start the computer, when it says press any key to boot from cd hit any key and let it load and then follow the prompts to install.

Lost output audio device

You should try reinstalling the device driver available from the Realtek site. Sometimes the driver can get out of whack after Windows Update.

Post your results here, especially if this doesn't solve your problem.

Powermate ES setup cannot find hard drive

Do you have the recovery discs that originally came with the computer? If you do, I would use these to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows. This would be the fastest option.

To do this:
Insert the disc into the CD-ROM
During boot-up and before the 'Use last known good configuration screen' you're speaking of, it'll ask you do 'hit a key to boot from CD' -- Do so
Follow the on-screen instructions. Your objective is to clean the hard drive completely (reformat) and reinstall windows (recover).

If you do not have the recovery disc that came with the computer, you can use the exact same steps above with a Windows XP disc. Be sure to 'format' and 'install' windows--not just 'repair.'

Re-boot computer when all finished.
