After i installed the belkin driver software it told me to plug in the adapter. I plugged it into a USB 2.0 card i installed on my old computer running windows ME. When i plug it in, windows installs it as a USB host controller and i cant get it to recognize it as a network adapter. I even manually tried to install the rt73.inf file in the device manager but it said it does not contain information about my hardware (obviously since it thinks its a usb host controller), Do i need something else to make it recognize it as a network adapter?

Re: Belking wireless adapter install
When you are advised to connect the usb adapter, it will recognise it, then the usb host controller is installed to recognise the adapter, but it should continue to instal the driver and then recognise it as Belkin 54g, if not, then you need to keep the cd rom in and then force it to install the driver from your cd drive, but it may not be compatable with ME unles you have a windows 2000 driver.
When the installation is complete you should in any case have the belkin software icon on your desktop to set up the adapter, if not then the software has not installed fully.
It will also be listed in add/remove programmes if it's fully installed.

Open up PC, Plug it wireless network into a PCI slot, turn on PC, the network device will be recognized and ask for drivers, you insert the CD/DVD that came with it, or use the software you downloaded from Belkin web site and install the WiFi card.. Run the Belkin software and it is installed. reboot PC, put case side back on.
The Belkin site has very specific instructions for installing this adapter in a pc with Vista. These instructions are at: http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D9050&aid=6112&scid=0 I would first unistall any Belkin Software that has already been installed, shut down the system completely and then restart. After you have fully restarted the system then follow the Belkin Site instructions EXACTLY. Any variation is apt to mean an unsuccessful install. Good Luck and have patience.
you mean that the adapter is not being recognised by the pc as a usb device, this adapter works better on a usb2.0 port, not as well on a usb1.0 port, depending on how old your pc is, try other ports., but you must uninstal the belkin driver from add/remove programmes, then install the driver again and inset adapter in a different usb port than before.
the adapter should then be found and click install driver automatically, but leave the cd in the drive as it normally picks the driver up again from the disk on it's own even after installing it yourself.
When installed i would recommend using windows wireless zero configuration (windows own software) instead of the belkin software, to do this right click on the network icon and select enable WZC (windows zero config), as this is a more stable programme for connecting your adapter signal to the router
Personally Belkin is poor in my opinion, netgear has better software and drivers, but it's belkin you have, so follow the above and it should be ok.
What OS (Operating System) are you using??
If it's Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7, then they MUST have any USB device plugged into the SAME USB port, or it screws up the OS.
Try going to Control Panel (Classic View), then choose SYSTEM to get into Device Manager, go down to USB and see if ANY Belkin adapters are listed (assuming the USB adapter IS Plugged In) - if you see any listed, double-click the adapters and choose to uninstall then.
If that doesn't work, then reboot, pressing F8 repeatedly before the Windows "Splash Screen" shows up. After repeatedly pressing F8 on Boot Up, you should select SAFE MODE (just the choice that only says SAFE MODE). Once SAFE MODE comes up, open Device Manager the same way you did before, then go down again to USB and Delete ANY & ALL Belkin USB adapters listed.
Then reboot and see it it recognizes the Belkin USB adapter now and hopefully will let you setup it's Software.
If you like this, please RATE me .... Thanks
Uninstall the old installation of the driver and the restart the pc. disconnect the belkin and install the software of the belkin. After installation insert the belkin device and let the system detect it. if this act thesame then maybe you update the driver of your belkin here you can download: http://www.belkin.com/support/
I have seen this product before several times. People can't get it to install on laptops (don't know if you have a laptop) but if this is true in your case...you will need to take it back and get a different product. It won't install.
Belkin drivers are a bit of a pain, uninstall the drivers again and remove the usb adapter, and follow exactly as per instructions, normally driver first, but ignore the pop up about the driver not being a signed windows if it does, just click install anyway.
toward the end of the installation you should be prompted to connect the usb adapter, the hardware should be found and then the installation should complete.
If driver installed ok but the adapter cant find the the driver plug it into a different usb port and again the found hardware should pop up then install driver popup should show and you should select install automatically.
