The router is a hardware firewall so your systems is already protected from intrusions. The internet can only see the routers i.p address and cannot see anything beyond that.If you want to be bulletproof do this as well. Do all your windows updates and keep them current. Get a good internet protection suite and keep it current.Norton Internet 2009 gets great scores from the experts and unlike old Norton products it is not a rescouce hog.It does all Antivirus,Spyware and Malware, root kit protection, anti phishing and tons more.

If your new modem has a wireless aerial then it has a built-in wireless router. If not then you need to plug your new modem into the wireless router.

I have a linksys WRT150N wireless n home router and I don't get internet signal with Ethernet or wireless all of the lights are blinking except power and security

I would ask for clarification, but the question that REALLY needs to be asked is: Are you signed up to any network? I've found that Linksis works as a motem. It picks up signals, and lets you onto the network as long as the network isn't locked. If it is locked, you'll need the WEP Key.

hold the reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds and the router should reset back to factory settings and you have to set it up again. Here's the manual though. bottom of page 62. instruction if you forgot password. But it works the same.

I want to password protect my sbg 1000 . i have never do it before but i have more stuff running thru now

You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

Open any web browser, such asInternet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. In the address bar, enter"192.168.0.1" (without the quotes) and press the enter key. This willbring up the login prompt for most Netgear wireless routers. If that doesn'twork, try "www.routerlogin.net", "192.168.0.5", or"10.1.10.1" until the login window appears.
Enter the username "admin"(again, without the quotes), and the password "password" in theappropriate fields, then click OK to login. If that password fails, try"1234," "Password" (with a capital "P"), or"admin" until you are greeted with the settings screen.

Make any required changes to thesettings. Under security, it is possible to specify a new username and passwordfor added security. Once you are done, close the window, and the system willautomatically log you out.

Your isp may not use the TOD (time of day) in the activation file they send your modem. What is the importance of your modem having the current time?

There's another option to configure the security or encryption using your SBG 900

Connect your computer to one of the LAN ports
Access the configuration of the modem (example 192.168.254.1)
The if you got the configuration page open find the wireless settings and configure the WPA or WEP security using your modem.

You can't use a T connector for a network (to my knowledge there is no such thing for an ethernet cable). All computers must connect directly to the router, whether they connect wirelessly or not.

Your other option is you can purchase a network hub/switch, e.g. one of these:

You plug this it into your router. Then you can plug usually up to four computer into it, and they'll all be on the network.

Networking with Motorola SBG 900 Gateway

No, you don't need a router... that gateway supports up to 253 devices on your private network segment. That being said, you only have one ethernet port, so if your desktops have LAN cards rather than wireless, you'll need a hub to split off enough ports. If you add a router, it'll give you a whole new level of complexity. A gateway is a router/modem combo. It converts the Cable Internet signal from your ISP to ethernet and isolates all of the computers behind it into your own private network. A hub is basically an ethernet splitter... it won't isolate a new network segment, it'll just add more ports. Get a hub, they are cheaper and won't add a new level of complexity.
