updated firmware from 5.60 (I thats what it was think) to 6.00 using web updater
I then scanned again with web updater and added the FM update available and ever since then it gets to the loading maps section (it resets if not attached to power, and if connected to power is seems to freeze).
and to add to the fun the PC will not see te Garmin, unless i go to Pre-boot mode. If I do that though it is seen by the device mananager (in Windows XP) but not as a USB Hard drive.
I have attempted to reset the device several times but there has been no solution.I have the same issue with my Nuvi 350

Your Garmin should have maps factory installed that load when you turn it on. If you want to update the maps you can 1) take the unit to a Garmin dealer to get updated maps or 2) Connect your unit to PC or laptop with internet through a usb cable and go online to Garmin.com. You must install a small program in the computer- Garmin Communicator - so your unit can communicate with the website. Go to Map Updates and download the update into your gps. You can update one time each year. Hope this helps.
Make sure that your GPS unit has a clear vision of the sky. Usually sitting on your dash will be good. Finding the Satillites from a full power off can take anywhere from 1 to 4 minutes. Also, any outside obsticles can hurt GPS coverage such as trees and tall buildings.
As for the maps and being told to turn on wrong streets: I have had this happen too but not very often. Our roads are consistently being changed and the maps take longer to be upgraded.
This is not really a sollution but more of an explanation.
Try connecting in your car and leave it on and let it charge while you are driving it may eventually find the satellite, it probably remembers the last satellite it found which was in Kansas. You may not be getting a signal where your are right now so run some errands and leave it connected in your car. You can also go to the garmin web site and try updating the unit. You will need a usb cable and will need to install garmin updater. Make sure the unit is fully charged. If this does not work you can call garmin and they are usually very helpful. Here is the garmin link which will help answer some more questions. http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/
Let me know what solved the problem. thanks for using fixya
From what I understand, you have a 30 day guarantee for the latest update map. That 30 day stretch starts from the day of first use (not the time of purchase). It it is not a store demonstration unit then you still have 15 days. It goes without saying that if the licensed map has not updated within the 30 days period, there is nothing to update. You can however still use the Map Share feature to download the minor map corrections.
I suggest you frequently connect your unit to the calculator and the Tomtom Home software will do the automatic updates. If a new map is issued within your 30 period you will get. Even if you missed it you should console yourself in the knowledge that major map update are not that frequent. You can also buy other maps from Tomtom.
im not sure if you were allready moving when this happened, but that is very common if you just turned the unit on, because it takes time for the satellites to locate and lock on to you when you first start the gps if it was totally turned off (sleep mode is another story)
if you lost the satellites while in the middle of your trip, that could of been caused by a few different reasons ,in between tall buildings, your gps might need updated, some windsheilds block gps reception to the point they can lock on to the satillites.
if the problem is persistent and your sure the unit was locked on to the satillites and you were in a relatively open area, i would try an update if it continues.
if you need help locating a update, just let me know. i would recommend updating it if its never been updated. bill
take the unit outside so that it has a clear view to the open sky, turn the unit on, then push the reset onthe side(you need a paper clip) youll know its reset once you see the magellan logo screen with the black loading bar on the bottom. let in sit outside to Aguire the satellites. this may take upto 30 minutes. if that does not work, you can try the latest update. bill
I'm about to return my Jensen NVX430BT because apparently the maps cannot be updated! The maps installed on the unit I just received are obviously outdated and there is no support from Jensen to get them updated. Too bad, this thing has it all except good directions.
Garmin puts out map updates on a regular basis. You must purchase these. The GPS comes loaded with maps that are current as of the date of production of the unit. It cannot "know" when new roads are paved and new subdivision are created without being "told" via map updates. The unit knows where it is in relation to the maps loaded on it by receiving signals from the GPS satellites in orbit. If things change, the maps must be changed in order for the unit to give you correct directions.
