The vertical lines only appear when the automatic sheet feeder is used. Copies made when the original is placed on the flatbed are fine.

Lift up a lid and clean the tiny scanner glass. One black dot will cause that effect to happen when using the document feeder. If the glass is clean, open the door on the right side and look at the green drum for lines. If you see any lines on the drum, then it's time for it to be replaced.

Unfortunately No.
Im guessing you have 2 black ink slots?.
When copying greyscale or printing greyscale it will use the big black however when printing colour it will always use the small black cartridge.

hope this helps

Why does canon 860 pixma printer have 2 black ink tanks? only one seems to be used,

The big black tank is pigment based ink used mainly for printing text documents and copies and the smaller black is dye based ink used along with the color inks during photo printing.

Big black line of ink prints on the back of the paper. Help!

This is caused by a blocked or full "Ink Absorber". I replaced mine myself and took a few photo's. Any waste ink is absorbed into a large area under the paper delivery rollers at the front of the printer. If there is a blockage or it becomes full it leaks out onto the front rollers creating the famous think black line.
The ink flows along the red arrows. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm189/Shadeyman67/DSC00495.jpg

And out into the ink absorber here.

Hope that helps some of you.

PAPER PRINTING OUT WITH BLACK LINES AND MARKS

When coping I have a black line down the left side of the page. This only happens when I'm copying NOT when I'm printing off a document from Word or the Internet on my computer. How can I get rid of this black line?

Black Ink won't work

Here is what I did and it worked: I took an old cartridge, cleaned it out and filled it with computer cleaning solution (denatured alcohol?) that I bought at a big box store... when I did the clean cycle 8 times, the black finally came out... messy at first, with obvious particles. After 4 copies in black, the printer was fine. This is a pretty common problem, and the guy at the shop that is their first thing to do on pretty much every printer they see like this.... they buy cartridges loaded with solution for just this problem.... the rest of us suffer.

Black wont print

sure. if you re lucky the generic ink hasn t destroyed the ph bk channel yet:

use skyhorse carts (http://www.skyhorse.net.cn ) who built good and reliable carts with a very good ink quality!

To get bk again:

press menu tehn start bk copy then fourtimes arrow up. machines will
be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4 then start bk copy. machine will initialize the carts, refresh all tubes and ph channels with fesh ink and eliminates the air bubbles (quite a big prob within brother inkjet printers). When finished press 7 -6 -3 to
run a power purge. leave the maintenance mode by pressing 9 then 9. do run a test print.

If you cant see ANY bk the ph is clogged and cant be fixed any more. it needs replacing then.

Can't I print with only one black ink

I have a similar machine ip5000. Currently have a problem getting the big one to print and have posted for a solution elsewhere. If I print withjust the small tank it does some black work i.e. type but it needs the other big tank to give full photo pictures.

If you are just looking to print typing try changing your font collour to a dark blue or other. This gets round the black problem but you will need the 2nd black cartridge for full colour work.

Hope this helps.
