If the leak is a small crack in the radiator itself, you can likely seal it with JB Weld or a similar temperature-resistant epoxy. If it's a large crack, you're better off in the long run replacing the radiator. If it's a split hose, replace the hose - don't try and patch it since it's flexible and under vibration of the engine, you stand to find that the seal will likely fail and you'll start leaking again.

what engine is in the car?

  • Anonymous Sep 22, 2008

did you wipe it all down to see if the fluid is trickling down a hose? maybe a freeze plug gone bad?

  • Anonymous Sep 22, 2008

the freeze plug is a little (bigger than a half dollar) brass, aluminum circle that is located in the block of the engine.

  • Anonymous Sep 22, 2008

no, you shouldn't have to. but you may need to be looking from the under carriage. you might need to raise the car and get down under looking up.

Sounds Ike a frost plug has gone bad. You need to get under the vehicle and take a look. Year, make, model, and engine size?

Transmission oil is leaking

Normally if oil or transmission fluid mixes with coolant it will turn milky looking like a milkshake. Your leak must be pretty fresh. from your description that it is coming out of the coolant overflow I am thinking you have a radiator transmission cooler leaking into the cooling system.

You will need a new radiator and possibly all the coolant hoses if they have become soft from the transmission fluid.

In most cases if your getting transmission fluid in the radiator it is cause by a bad transmission cooler that is built into the radiator and the fix is to replace the radiator.

The repair will change in price from where the leak is coming from. If the pan is leaking or the rear seal your looking at $100.00 or less. If the front seal is leaking then around $550.00. The most common leak is the pan gasket. Also if the transmission fluid and filter have not been replaced in the last 30,000 miles and the pan is leaking then I suggest doing this also why the pan is off .

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Which drain plug is the correct one on a 2004 toyota 4 rnner. There is one for the transmission and one for oil.I dont want to drain the wrong one

The oil drain plug is the one closest to the radiator, on the larger of the 2 metal pans. The oil drain plug is directly under the engine.

The transmission drain plug is on the smaller/thinner metal pan, it is directly under the transmission.

Think I need oil pan gasket

It's probably the front crank seal or the cam seal. Kinda big job for a novice. The car only has one oil pan. The back one she refered to is for the transmission,if it's automatic. Never saw a oil pan gasket leak on a nissan '96 & up.

Water leaking from a freeze plug and water in the oil pan in a 283 small block chevy engine

If you have a bad or leaky freeze plug, also known as soft plugs, it needs to be replaced. Your brass plugs are the best, and in some hard to get to places there are rubber plugs that can be adjusted to fix the problem. But if you have oil in the oil pan, assuming no one put water in the engine. You probably overheated the engine enough to acquire a cracked head gasket. Normaly that's the problem, could be a cracked head also, but more than likely a gasket. If you decide to remove the heads and replace the gaskets, good idea to have the heads resurfaced.
