Check to see if the switch or body is all the way over. Sometimes a part of the strap or the switch itself does not go all the way.

Wont turn on and lens wont extend. Put in new fully charged battery but still nothing. Can hear motor but nothing works.

This is may be a camera battery problem or a lens error. Try Li-ion batteries first and see if anything better

Lens wont retract into camera

Sounds like the lens barrel has been damaged. Does it look as if it's pointing slightly sideways or is it not perfectly round anymore?

Battery life to short

Most re-chargeable batteries are 1.2V each, totalling 2.4V. The Z712IS Camera is designed for 3V operation. Therefore using 2 re-chargeable bats is not enough, UNLESS they are 3 or 3.7V.

EasyShare Z712IS

the camera will work with any brand of lithium but only the KLIC 8000 battery will work as a rechargeable

please look at your getting started guide and check page 1, there's an illustration of the 3 types of batts that will work:
lithium crv3, lithium aa and klic 8000
ni-mh is really not compatible

please check at the bottom of your camera, the three types of batts I mentioned are engraved at the battery door

thank you
