Try removing the battery, insert Pearl WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY PRESSING the "PLAY" button. Windows Device Manager should see the device under "Human Interface Devices"as a "USB Human Interface Device". Run the latest firmware update, it will see the HID device and initialize it as a "Disk Drive", "_Generic MSC Recovery USB Device". Once the firmware update is complete the Pearl should work again. The trick was to remove the battery and hold down the "Play" button to force recovery mode.

When you unplug the mp3 player, you remove the device from the computer. And the computer can't really read any data that isn't there now, can it? :3

I plug in my RCA TH 1602-A and it won't even

I just fixed my RCA Lyra TC1602A MP3 Player. It had two problems:

  1. When connected to various computers the USB device is not recognized; and
  2. When turned on, the device software freezes and will not load (can only be turned off by removing the battery).
I went to the following link, downloaded the firmware to my computer, double clicked on the exe file and followed the instructions below VERY CLOSELY:

http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/page/12/r_id/103795

Troubleshooting (info from exe files):

If you see the "Initializing..." message displayed for the Player for more than 5 minutes, or your Player cannot be upgraded successfully, please try the following steps:

Step 1: Without closing the Update Device Application, disconnect your Player from your computer.

Step 2: Reset your Player
a. If your Player uses AA or AAA batteries, remove them from the Player
b. If your Player uses an internal battery, press and hold the POWER button for 10 seconds

Step 3: Hold down the PLAY key on your Player and connect it to the PC via a USB cable.

Step 4: Release the PLAY key when a progress bar and text, "initializing" appears on the Players display. If you cannot see the "initializing" text, please disconnect your Player and try again.

Step 5: Click the START button in the Upgrade Application button as described in the steps above.

This worked for me and I was just about to mail my unit for repair. Please note the Repair Dept number is 1 866 449 7112.

I hope this has helped you.

Turning it on jusy reads pearl won't go anywhere else its locked up

This is a fairly common issue with flash based devices and usually requires reflashing the firmware.

You can download the update from the RCA help site here:
http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1451/session/L3NpZC9YaTg4X21Oag==

Be sure to back up any important media on the device in case the fimware install wipes out the media on the device.

On a side note, these devices DO NOT have a reset hole on them, the hole on the back is a mic and you can damage that by sticking any item in there. To perform a reset, you would just press and hold the play button for 15 seconds; however, that is likely to get your player out of its current faulty mode.

I have a mp3 rca lyra radio and mp3 player. It

Do you have the RCA LYRA PEARL, with the folding out usb plug? RCA has made bunch of different mp3 players and has reused the LYRA and the PEARL name. Mine has both names on it, and the firmware file below is for model numbers TC- or TH-1602 or 1604.

One time I replaced my battery and my unit would not go any further than the Pearl logo. So, I downloaded the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1, and followed all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you start the program:

start the program,
remove the battery,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button the the term "initalizing" replaces "searching",
check the box that says "format data" (you can try it first without this checked, it may work and will save your music),
click the start button to replace the firmware.

After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again.

My rca 1602 is locked up it shows pearl in the window and the menu button will not work

It sounds like there is a firmware corruption and need to be reflashed. Be sure to back any important media up before installing the firmware as it can remove all media from your device. You can download the firmware files here:

My rca pearl comes on with a screen that says

Sounds like the firmware on the device is corrupt. Try reinstalling the firmware, it can be downloaded here:

You may want to back up the media on your device as a precaution before doing the upgrade if the media isn't currenlty on your computer.

RCA pearl 1602-A won't register when plugged into USB port.

When my computer wouldn't recognize my Pearl, these are the steps I followed after downloading the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1

remove the battery,
start the program,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button when the term "initializing" replaces "searching",
click the start button to replace the firmware.

You might want to try leaving the "format data" box unchecked the first time. If that doesn't work and allow you to backup your music, bite the bullet and format the data area.

After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again. It also fixed my aac-error problem.
