Question about HP 48gx Calculator

1 Answer

Rs 232 port in the HP 48GX

Where can I send a couple of 48GX calculators to have the RS 232 port replaced? I use them as Data Collectors and from the repeated plugging and un-plugging of the cable, the pins either become broken or loose and the unit no longer communicates with the instruments or computer. Thanks for any or all help.

For connecting a RS-232 port with a RS-485 port you need a signal level adapter since they work with different voltage and signal types, RS-232 uses unbalanced signals and RS-485 uses balanced signals, if you want to build your own adapter please check the following schematic as a reference:

Options for Adding Serial Ports
The serial port is prevalent on PC's as well as scores of industrial, scientific and consumer devices, making it a convenient starting point for communications. Since RS-232 itself is only suited to short connections (50 ft. max.) many applications require that it be adapted to fit requirements. RS-422, typically used for extending RS-232 communications, provides full duplex communications between two devices. It can also provide one way communications from one master to several slaves. RS-485 communications standard allows cable lengths up to 4000 feet. It also provides very high noise immunity. Multidrop connections up to 32 different nodes can be made over a single twisted pair cable along with a signal ground connection.
This article summarizes the choices a system designer has when adding a serial (RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485) communications device. There are many different ways to add additional serial ports to your Desktop PC, Palm, or Laptop PC. USB, PCMCIA, PCI and ISA are some of the methods that will be discussed.
The Universal Serial Bus (USB) provides a high data rate and Hot Swap connection for PCs, providing an easy connection to a wide variety of multimedia and network USB devices. Generally considered to be for home or office use, USB is finding its way into Industrial applications.
PCMCIA Serial Ports are yet another way to add serial ports to a PC that has PCMCIA Slots available. Most Laptops today offer only one (if any at all) DB9 type serial ports. A PCMCIA Serial Card is a good way to add a serial port (or ports) to any laptop that is low on available serial ports (RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485).
PCI Cards are becoming more popular as a way to add serial ports to desktop PC's. PCI type slots are becoming the "norm" in standard PC's today, and PCI Serial Cards are an excellent way to add serial ports. The standard Desktop PC may only come with one serial port standard (if any serial ports at all). PCI Serial Cards use Software Drivers to address the ports to the PC.
ISA Cards are yet another way to add serial ports to the older desktop PC's. ISA type slots are becoming scarce in standard PC's today, but are still an excellent way to add serial ports. The ISA Cards are typically addressed using dip switches and shunts or jumpers to set IRQ's for each port. No Software Drivers are required with ISA style serial cards.
Palm OS PDA's may be connected to RS-422 or RS-485 data circuits using Palm adapters. These adapters offer total portability for collecting data and field service chores. The Palm device and the adapter will usually slip into a shirt pocket. Some models use the PDA's connecting cable, some include a cable and some are cradles that allow the PDA to nest in place and connect directly to the Palm base socket. PalmTerm Freeware allows you to transmit and receive data from the Palm serial port.

Heena has only rs 2 and rs 5 coins,in her purse. if in all she has 80 coins in her purse amounting to rs 232. find the number of rs 5 coin.

Is this a maths school problem?
You need to use algebra -
2x + 5y = 232 (heena has a number of 2 and 5 coins in her purse which add up to 232)
x + y = 80 (heena has x number of 2 and y number of 5 coins which tally to 80)
therefore, x = 80 - y
so going back to first equation, 2(80 - y) + 5y = 232
160 - 2y + 5y = 232
3y = 72
y = 24
and going back to x, x = 80 - y
x = 80 - 24
x = 56
so heena has 56 rs 2, and 24 rs 5. So the answer is 24.

Looking for download for msr206

There isn't a download for this reader, it simply sends the data read via RS-232, aka, a serial port.

You can get TeraTerm Pro for free (find it with your favorite search engine) to receive the data when you read a card. Other serial port communications programs are available as well.

Most devices like this default to 9600, 8, n, 1 for serial port settings, but you may have to fiddle with these settings, 1200 and 4800 are also fairly common for this type of device .

How to connect my laptop via RS232 to my NEC XN120 telephone exchange using the PC Pro telephone system software in order to programme the exchange?

I connect mine with the RS-232 cable in the side of my laptop. It's a Toshiba rinning Windows XP (nee Vista).

Since you're asking the question, I guess you don't have an RS-232 port. For my Vista machines without serial ports, I own a USB to RS-232 adapter cable. On our side of the pond, they carry names like Iogear GC-232. Here's a U.K. search result http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-RS232-Converter-Cable/dp/B00077DJIQ

Sometimes, you have to go into the device manager and change the port assignment of these adapters to something in the 1-4 serial port range. That was common with the old software.

Need configuration and reset barcodes for Symbol LT1820-I100A

Hi, the LT1820 is strictly an RS-232 device. The Product Reference Guide can be found at the link below and the Set Defaults barcode is on Adobe page 47 of 105.

http://support.symbol.com/support/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=0804302bpdf&sliceId=&dialogID=14395378&stateId=0%200%2014391883

This scanner's default RS-232 settings are 9600 baud, Even parity, Two stop bits, 7 data bits, and no hardware or software handshaking. Standard RS-232 is normally 9600, 1 stop bit, 8 data bits, no parity, no hardware or software handshaking. I hope this information helps.

Want to connect to my computer

What connector/interface does your PC has
9-pin or 25-pin connector

If it has 9-pin connector: use the following:
DB-9 RS-232 Serial Connection
or
DB-25 RS-232 Serial Connection

If it has 25-pin connector: use the following:
DB-25 Serial Connection
or
DB-25 RS-232 Serial Connection

If you are configuring the computer to use an RS-422A serial port, you need a special cable. Contact the computer or printer network manufacturer to see if an RS-422A cable is available. If no cable is available, contact your computer manufacturer for your computer pin assignments and have a cable constructed.

The default configuration for the serial port on the printer is for RS-232C serial communication. To set the printer to use RS-422A serial communication, change the control panel Serial Menu’s SERIAL setting to SERIAL=RS-422.

Printronix5003H+ table mismatch

I'm sure you have fixed your printer by now... but reflash the printer.

Flash memory is contained in SIMMs (single in-line memory modules) located
on the controller board. Printer emulation and operating system software are
loaded into flash memory at the factory, but you will install software in some
situations:
• The customer buys the PGL or VGL graphics, Expansion-CT, or IPDS
option after the printer is installed
• The customer needs to upgrade printer software
• The customer needs different emulation software
• You have replaced the controller board
• You have added or replaced the flash memory SIMM
Emulation and operating system software are stored as a compressed file on
a 3.5 inch floppy diskette. This file is “executable.” You will expand it and copy
it into printer flash memory.
You can load software through the serial, parallel, or Ethernet port of the
printer.
1. If the printer has an Ethernet interface, refer to the PrintNet User’s Manual
for the download instructions. You are finished with this procedure. If you
are going to load memory through the serial or parallel port, continue with
this procedure.
2. Make a printout of all saved configurations. (Refer to the User’s Manual.)
(Installing new software erases all saved configurations. You will use the
printouts to restore printer configuration.)
3. Set the printer power switch to O (off).
4. If the printer is already connected to the serial or parallel port of a
computer capable of running an MS-DOS® based PKZIP® self-extracting
file, go to step 11. If not, go to step 5.
5. Unplug the AC power cord from the printer.
6. Disconnect all data input cables from the printer interfaces.
7. Connect a parallel data cable to the LPT1 port or a serial data cable to the
COM1 port of an IBM-compatible computer that is using the PC-DOS™ or
MS-DOS operating system.
NOTE: You can connect the cable to the LPT2 port if the LPT1 port is alreadyin use. The load commands are different if you use this port, as
described in the note after step 18.
8. Connect the data cable to the appropriate I/O port of the printer.
9. Plug the AC power cord into the printer.
10. Power on the computer.
11. Insert the emulation or upgrade diskette into diskette drive A (or B) of the
computer.
12. Make the diskette drive the active drive by typing the following at the DOS
prompt:
A:<return> (If the diskette is in drive B, type B:<return>)
13. Get the name of the compressed file on the diskette by listing the
contents of the diskette; at the DOS prompt type:
DIR<return>
The compressed file on the diskette takes the form FILENAME.EXE
Now write down the complete name of the file with the .EXE extension.
14. On the printer control panel, press and hold down the ON LINE + PAPER
ADVANCE keys. Without releasing the keys, power the printer on.
Continue holding the ON LINE and PAPER ADVANCE keys down for five
seconds, then release them.
NOTE: The port default is CENTRONICS; this is the standard load through
the parallel port. If you want to use the default, continue at step 18.
15. When you see “WAITING FOR PROGRAM DOWNLOAD” on the LCD,
press the < (NEXT) key. “SELECT DOWNLOAD PORT =
DATAPRODUCT” appears on the LCD.
16. Press < (NEXT) again to cycle through the download ports available in
the printer:
DATAPRODUCT (parallel)
CENTRONICS* (parallel) (default port)
RS232-9600 (RS-232 serial, 9600 baud)
RS232-19.2K (RS-232 serial, 19200 baud)
RS232-38.4K (RS-232 serial, 38400 baud)
RS232-115K (RS-232 serial, 115000 baud)
RS422-9600 (RS-422 serial, 9600 baud)
RS422-19.2 (RS-422 serial, 19200 baud)
RS422-38.4K (RS-422 serial, 38400 baud)
RS422-115K (RS-422 serial, 115000 baud)
17. When the printer download port you want to use is displayed on the LCD,
press ENTER. “WAITING DOWNLOAD / PORT = <your selection>
appears on the display.
18. At the DOS prompt on the computer type:
FILENAME.EXE -pb<return>
where FILENAME.EXE is the compressed file you noted in step 13. This
command decompresses the file on the diskette and copies it as a binary
file into the flash memory on the printer controller board.
NOTE: If you are loading the file using the LPT2 port on the computer, enter
the following DOS command:
FILENAME.EXE -pb 2 <Return>
The 9600 baud rate is the only selection older versions of DOS can
use. The baud rate information entered in the following DOS
commands must match the selection you made in step 16.
the load process and status. (LCD messages are listed in Table 2,
page 37.)
CAUTION Do not interrupt the downloading process once it has started.
Interrupting a download will damage the flash memory on the controller
board and PrintNet card ( if installed).
19. When the new program has successfully loaded into memory and the
printer has reset itself, set the printer power switch to O (off).
20. Unplug the AC power cord from the printer.
21. Remove the diskette from the computer and store it with the printer.
