My computer doesen't recognize the hard drive

I have a simpletech 250Gb HD. I use a Macbook at home and PC at work. The HD does not come up on the mac desktop or the "My Computer" folder of the PC. Both usb cables are connected to ensure there is enough power but I still get nothing. Since the drive doesn't pop up I can't reformat the drive. Any suggestions?

You need to partition the drive in the first instance before it will do anything, ( as they are not initially partitioned) you need to go into logical drive management to partition the drive. (right click on my computer, select Manage then when the mangement screen comes up select logical drive manager, you should then be able to see your unpartitioned drive which you should then be able to partition and format)

SimpleTech 250 gig external drive not recognized on MacBook

It could be formatted in a different manner. See if it is detected by your mac. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and see if your hard drive is shown there. If it is, then the formatting of your hard drive is not compatible and you will need to reformat to be able to use it on a mac.

My simpletech 250gb cannot be recognized by my computer, i use window now but before i use mac, how can i open my files on my simpletech using widowsXP OS?

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

if this fails to fix the problem

check usb leads for secure dust free seating

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

hope this helps

if this fails to fix the problem
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap

hope this helps

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

SimpleTech not reconize by my computer.

hi there,

i will pass on what was given to me for information. if you are still getting power to the drive you can remove the external casing, remove your pc side panel, where you would insert memory and plug the hard drive into the tape inside your pc to see if the pc will recognize the hard drive. if you are not getting any power or platters spinning then it is more serious. i wish you all the best. cherie

Computer doesn't recognize the external drive

I asume the connection is via an USB?
Try another usb-port and see if that helps, if not try to connect the disc on another PC (maybe a friends pc) and see is that pc recognize the disc.

Good luck!

Hard Drive problem

Have a simpletech 96300-40001-001 external hard drive from couple years ago I bougt at Sam's. I have lost the installation software. It will now work on my laptop, the computer I bought it for because I installed it there when i bought it, but it will not work on the others (not recognized) and I cant seem to find a download of drivers that will make it work on this desktop and my other laptop. Do you know where I can get a copy of the original installation CD that came wih the hard drive. I am running XP Home on all three computers.
