Question about Canon PIXMA MP160 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Won't scan if ran out of ink

My Canon MP160 won't scan when my printer run out of ink. Any solution besides buying cartridges? Thanks!

    I have the mp 210 same problem will not scan while there is an error message once the cartridge counter says the ink has run out have used refilled cartridge till ink counter switched chip off.now won't scan as well.

No, mate,Canon have sewn the job up!.You have to buy new cartridges every time!
This has happeened to me,as well.

The ink cartridges are not installed [1401], or a non-supported ink cartridge is installed [1485], or the ink cartridges are not installed properly [1687].
Check if supported ink tank(s) is installed, and re-install them properly, and then close the scanning unit.

I can print off things from the printer but cannot scan.It has not worked since the printer inks ran out.

Error 4


The error code E4 indicates that ur printer is low on black ink if ur getting this error error code then u need to replace the blak ink cartridge. Hope this solution will solve ur prob

How to change ink jet cartridge canon 'pixma' printer mp160


Please go to this Canon link (click here) and enter the term "ink cartridge replacement" in the search window for a set of detailed instructions (with pictures) on how to replace your ink cartridges.
As you face the printer, with the scan cover open,in position to remove them, the black cartridge goes on your left and the color on the right.

MP210: Can I use the scanner without the printer?


yeah same problem here wit a mp160.. will try it with new cartridges, if that fails, i'll never buy canon again

E5 and 2,114,0 errors on Canon MP160


Empty cartridges may cause this error. Here is the error code list for your printer

E2-2 = No paper (ASF)
E3-3 = Paper jam
E4 = No ink
E5-5 = The ink cartridges are not installed or a non-supported ink cartridge is installed, or the ink cartridges are not installed properly
E8 = Waste ink absorber full, or platen waste ink absorber full
E9 = The connected digital camera / video camera does not support Camera Direct Printing
E14 = The Ink cartridges whose destination are wrong
E15 = Ink cartridge is not installed E16 - Ink remaining is unknown
E16 -E19 = Failed to scan head alignment sheet
E22 = Carriage error
E23 = Paper feed error
E24 = Purge unit error
E25 = ASF(cam) sensor error
E26 = Internal temperature rise error
E27 = Waste ink absorber full or platen waste ink absorber full
E28 = Ink cartridge temperature rise error -
E29 = EEPROM error
E33 = Paper feed position error
E35 15 = USB Host VBUD overcurrent error - USB
E37 17 = Abnormal motor driver error
E40 20 = Other hardware error
E42 22 = Scanner error

Ink Cartridge Refill Error E5


press and hold (stop/reset) for at least 5 seconds, then release it. It will tell the printer that refilled ink tanks are installed. Therefore, allowing printing to continue.
