Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

Audio works fine but voice doesn't

My Dell inspiron 6400 with SigmaTel high definition audio on windows XP service back 3 runs some sorts of audio files well but doesn't run others

It runs most locally present files & I can make voice calls using skype well, but I can't run things like youtube embedded videos (i see the video but i don't hear any thing)

when i open the sound & audio devices properties from the control panel, in the audio tab, there midi music playback default device is blank, but when i click the arrow beside the dropdown list, i find that microsoft SG wavetable SW synth is there.. I select it, then I goto the Audio tab, I find that the voice playback default device list is empty too, by clicking the arrow, I find "SigmaTel Audio', "Bluetooth Audio", and "Bluetooth High quality Audio", i select sigma tel , I goto Volume tab, & enable the check box "Place volume icon in the tskbar".. finally i click apply & ok
NOTHING happens.. the icon is not placed in the taskbar, nothing is selected in nether the MIDI nor the Voice playback.

In the device manager: Legacy Audio Drivers propperties contain NO Multimedia Devices & there is NO tab for driver

The solution at: http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=484539 should have worked, namely the part to access http://support.dell.com and select the "audio" drivers for your version of Windows (XP? Vista? 7?) and download/install them.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with SigmaTel High Definition Audio. The driver is SigmaTel 5.10.0.5515 dated 5/10/2007. I have skipping and scratchy noise for about a month. New speakers do not make a...

you can try doing a fresh install of windows to see if there is any driver conflicts.

Before you do that though i would download and burn a ubuntu cd to try some tests with linux.

when you put in the linux cd it will give you the option to "try linux without any changes to my computer". select that option.

Linux distributions often come with generic drivers that work with most hardware types.

see if you have the same issue with ubuntu. If you do then you may have deeper issues. If you do not then a simple reinstall of windows should suffice.

hope this helps.

Computer sound not working

ah, try the FN key and holding i down then quickly pressing the end key without releasing fn, then release them.
i have an inspiron laptop computer too just an older version so this might not work, if it doesnt go to control panel, sounds, audio and etc. then go to "Adjust System volume" or one of the other ones under "Sound" which are already up when you click onto that
