Question about Conexant (56KUSBMODEM)

1 Answer

Fax takes too long to send.

I am faxing a word doc from my computer using MicroSoft Fax Console. I am running XP with sp 3. I am sending a 14 page fax, 3000mb apx, to Greece. Page one, the cover sheet seems to go fine. Page two never finishes . Error message comes up after 30 mins or so. Page two does contain a large photo. But its condensed to 150dpi. The doc prints fine. Also it faxes fine to my office computer here in the USA. Ideas??? I have tried faxing 1 page at a time in case the cache on the receiving end is very small. Its a government office in Greece. Can it be that small?

We're WinFax support experts and this usually isn't a WinFax specific problem.

Make sure you have proper drivers for Win98 and your modem. Some Conexent (SOFT) modems will allow the installation of incorrect drivers, causing all dialing functions to fail. (NO DIAL TONE/NO CARRIER/ NO Incoming RING detection)

Check your modem via Hyperterminal (or another terminal program)

This is often caused by the wrong country setting in Windows, as different countries use different dialtones.

Make sure your computer is set correctly in Regional and Language Options in Control Panel.

Yes. You can. You will need a telephone line, a modem and a scanner, along with your computer. And before you can send and receive faxes from your computer, you will need to install the fax component. This fax component is not installed in Windows XP by default.
How to install the Fax Component:

Now you will see a Windows Component Wizard, which will setup the Fax service in your computer. Make sure the modem and telephone line are connected to your computer, along with the Scanner.
Now you have to configure the Fax component in your computer. In order to do that, you have to go to the Fax Console which is located at

Remember to Enter your Company's Name and Fax Number under Transmitting Subscriber Identification(TSID) and Caller Subscriber Identification (CSID). These fields are very important.

Receiving faxes on your computer.
Remember, you have already specified where the incoming faxes should be located and also how you wanted the incoming fax calls to be answered -manually or automatically. The Fax Monitor opens up automatically when the modem detects an incoming fax.
To view an incoming fax, go to the Fax Console and click on Inbox. Double-click on the fax entry you have just received and it will open up in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. HP USB Modem does not break dial tone

If the information connected to your post is all correct (56k V90 usb), and you are using one line for both the internet and the fax, you should hang up from the internet before you try to dial out the fax.

You have not indicated your PC model, so I don't know what operating system you are using. For XP and newer versions, you have to set up and configure the fax using the wizard or configuration software. If you have not done that yet, you need to.

In xp, go to start, Programs , Accessories , Communication , Fax , and then click Fax Console.

You said your computer is new. Win 7 and Vista are much the same:

1.Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan.

2.At the bottom of the left pane, click Fax, and then click New Fax on the toolbar to launch the Fax Setup wizard.

3.Click Connect to a fax modem and follow the instructions.

You also need to make sure that your fax/modem is correctly listed in the control panel. In XP, start, control panel, printers and devices. If you do not have a fax printer listed, you need to "install a local fax printer."

The installation wizard should work in both OS without much trouble. If you do have difficulty, Microsoft and adobe both have "virtual printers" you can use. Look in Microsoft office or online.

Also check control panel of 7 to make sure that your modem and fax are listed correctly. Thanks for using Fixya.

I would like to use my epson stylus cx7800 to receive and send fax's. Can this be done. Please explain and instruct. Thanks. lstrat@telusplanet.net

If you are running Windows, and have a modem, you can use the Windows Fax Services which are built in.

You may not have it installed, as it's an optional component. Go to Control Pane/Add Remove programs. Select Windows Components on the left hand side. If Fax services is not checked, do so, and press OK. You may need your original Windows install CD to complete the task.

If you still need help with this, please respond to this message. If I have solved your problem, I would appreciate you rating this as "solved".

Good Luck
