Question about ASUS A8S-X Motherboard

1 Answer

MOBO carshes I've recently installed this trying to increase my speed without too much cost but seem to have gone backwards. Not only does it crash regularly but it also hangs or slows down even though nothing is evdently working in the background. Can't even thing of using it for video editing etc I tried to update the BIOS but it told me I had a more recent one installed than what I downloaded from the website. Any ideas?

The most recent installation is a WinTV card and software but really it's been a problem from the start. I have 2 SATA drives. 3 IDE drives and 1 burner also IDE. Initially I also installed 1 PCI Express USB card and ! PCI Express LAN card but I removed the latter two to see if things improved. They didn't. I have 2 GB of Ram but all this worked better on my older Mobo which was also an Asus but more basic.

Wow. You got a lot of drives. But that shouldn't be a problem unless one of the drives are having trouble. If a drive is having a bad sector, overall PC would slow down. Also, if the CD/DVD drive is working, there might be a major slowndown. So remove any DVD/CD inside the drive. About your Disk drives, try a more basic setup by removing other drives and test the system with just one drive if the performance is well. If it is, add the others one by one. Scandisk the disk which massively slowed down the computer. You may also want to check for trojans, spyware and adwares that may eat up a lot of your resources.

The fans and indicators working for a sec would normally mean that your power supply is Ok. This flash of current must trigger a switch in the mobo to start the boot process. This is not happening. The RAM is a principal player here if it does not connect the memory to the processor nothing will happen. Assuming the RAM is correct and has worked faultlessly before, remove and clean the teeth with an eraser. This prob can also be caused by the VGA card not connecting. Usually alarms sound if your mobo speaker is connected but that depends on each mobo. These are basic steps that usually start machines that have been inactive for a time or have recently been exposed to high humidity. There could be other faults...............

You dont need the drivers untill after windows has been installed....However... If windows does not pick your network adapter up, you will need to load these before you can get online.
Download all the drivers for the motherboard and just Burn them onto a cd as a data disc, so you have them ready

Overclocking aopenax4b-533 mobo

In some motherboards, you can increase the multiplier, which will increase your processor speed.(Briefly, Processor Speed = FSB x Multiplier) You can also increase the chipset, memory, and CPU voltage, which will sometimes allow you to have a higher FSB. There are other settings such as PCI Bus and AGP Bus, you generally don't want to touch those, either they might put risk to your PC, or that they won't make much difference in performance. Be careful when you overclock because you can really damage your computer that way.

Mobo Compatibility and tech/spec variations

All Asus P5GC-MX/1333 mobos are "X-series" boards.

If you put higher speed ram on that mobo, it will just run the ram at lower speeds.

The board will not take 1333 speed DDR3, because it is only DDR2 compatible.

OVerclocking is complicated and risky, here is neither the place to teach or learn overclocking.

Some newer core 2 chips will automatically overclock, when all but 1 core is in hibernation (which will never happen if you are using vista). Other than that overclocking involves setting the bios to increase the memory buss speed, as well as slightly increasing the cpu and ram voltages as needed for stability. There is a great risk associated with manually overclocking and adjusting voltages, and should not be attempted by beginners on machines they value.

Crash and reboots randomly

Carefully wriggle wires on the back of the PC, one at a time. A card (like video) could be loose. Also, make sure the heatsink/fan is clean, and running. It might be time to reinstall your operating system (I bet it is microsft). If you have another HD, you could install windows on it in your sys, and see what happens.
