Question about Coleman Powermate Powermate 5000W Generator

Powermate 5000 dies after a couple of hours

I purchased a Powermate 5000 about 3 years ago. It stayed in the box until about a month ago when I put it together and fired it up. That was just in time because I've been without power for 9 days now thanks to Hurricane Ike.

The generator was working great until last night when it died 4 times during the night. It seems to run great for about a couple of hours, then it just quits. When I pull the cord, it starts right back up.

Since I started running it, I have changed the oil after the first 5 hours then after every 50 hours. I replaced the fuel filter and spark plug today (even though I don't think they needed it). I drained the tank of gas and replaced it with fresh gas. I thought it might be getting too hot, so I put a fan on it. It still shuts down every 2 hours.

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I just want you to try this.
Take the air filter off
clean the carb bowl.
Take carb cleaner and spray directly into carb.
Check the gas lines that they are clear.

The carburetor.
The problem may be that the carburetor is may be blocked up not letting fuel get through. Sometimes they are very hard to clean and get them to run correct, you need to use a magnifying glass and remove the jest and look at the passages closely, Or get your engine model numbers and id and go price a carburetor. Thats is the best fix.

Thanx for using fixya.
Hope it works.
Bye.
Have a nice day.

You will need to contact Powermate directly (see below), and give themthe CORRECT model # info that you have there on that Genset.

Unfortunately what you posted above doesn't help out at all as there isNO model # for reference. Certain models are no longer available asthey have been discontinued and only by contacting Powermate directlywill you get the proper Operators Manual.

There should be no charge for this and most likely it will be a PDF download sent by their service dept.

The model # should be found either on the engine decal plate or else on the generator head assy or it's power panel.

Please post me a reply as to finding this solution being the bestresolve to your missing Operators Manual problem by following thecompany references & links below. Also please rate mytroubleshooting fix as well.

Keep me posted and I'll follow up as well.

Best regards,

Kevin

    FOLLOW-UP ON POWERMATE 1000 & 5000 GENSET

A follow-up to my original post here with some added Powermate info
that hopefully will get you an Operator's Manual (and more) for all your Powermate
Gensets out there if you follow-up on the info here.

As you are now hopefully but painfully aware - Powermate has gone
totally Bankrupt, and is no longer in business as of this past year or
    so.

There is hope though - as I state below in the Footnote:

Footnote: It's too late now for all those
    out there that
unfortunately bought these now still Brand New "unservicealbe"
Powermate units that won't start for whatever, whether still Brand New
"NIB", or whether taken out of the box and still not used, and are
now seeking some kind of service on them (btw it's a sign of the
present day GOP ran economic woes we are in AND it will only get worse
    - CHINA is going on the very same downward path right now thanks to you
know who - W!). If you buy anything today "made in China" you better be
making a GOOD buying decision - otherwise you will be in the very same situation
you are in now with your Powermate Gensets - as China is starting to
collapse from within just like this USA economy of ours has been doing for
the last 5-6 years to no end! All politics aside as well - as blame is
put where it is deserved in my books and we can only blame YOU KNOW
    WHO! Sorry but true!

    NOW -

Any inventory stock of their (Powermate) Gensets - that were once formerly sold in the USA & Canada - have been
totally liquidated out to a company in Georgia I was told, and it was said to be true.

I was able to get this NEW added info through another source said to be VERY accurate btw - so hopefully it is.

That Company's name is PRAMAC, and their phone # is 770-218-5430.

    BUT -

Before you blame me for any false info on that PRAMAC Co, or their phone # read the GOOD NEWS below first.

The GOOD NEWS is that I spoke with a very close contact inside Home
Depot (not saying who so don't even ask), and that person gave me some
very GOOD NEWS for those that act on it NOW!

Not tomorrow - Not next week - Not next month - and certainly NOT NEXT YEAR!

    DO IT RIGHT NOW!!

I spoke with my Home Depot Corp contact today (using your dilemma - as
my own - to get a response) to see if anything could be done from their
point of view and here's what I was told to do.

What I was told is that if I bring in my ORIGINAL HOME DEPOT CASH
REGISTER DATED RECEIPT and speak to the (whichever Home Depot store
applies here) Home Depot Store Manager there, and explain to them that
the brand new never used Powermate Genset they sold me (you in this
case) won't start - they would send your Genset out to their local
Genset Service Vendor FREE OF CHARGE BTW, and hopefully get it started
    for you.

Anything more then that - you would be on your own if it was damaged by you or someone else that tried using it.

Here's another IMPORTANT FACT my contact at Home Depot told me.

Almost 95% of all the Genset problems found by the Service Center are
related to the fact that people don't read the OWNERS MANUAL and just
didn't put OIL in the Genset - as they are shipped from the MFR without
OIL in the units to begin with!!!!

And here I thought everybody KNEW THAT!!

I guess sometimes you just have to ask the OBVIOUS ??'s first huh?

If you bought your Powermate Genset from other then a Home
Depot Store then you will have to contact that outlet and see what they
    have to say.

Best regards to all with the same problems, and hope I helped you out 100% - all political humor/truth aside.

Please post me a reply as to finding this solution being the best
resolve to your Powermate problem there by following my recommendations
above. Also please rate my troubleshooting fix as well.

Keep me posted and I'll follow up as well.

I replaced the battery in mine(coleman powermate) for 10 bucks but you have to be careful in how you disassemble it and put it back together. Batteries sulfate after awhile like a car battery.

I purchased a Coleman Powermate 5000 6 years ago: Ser: 94411583. Never really used it for any length of time. Kept for emergency. An electrician checked it for voltage output a short time ago. 240V...

Voltage is adjusted by raising or lowering the engine speed (governor adjustment), however one must also pay attention to the rpm because your generator was designed to produce 120 volts at 60 cycles while turning 3600 rpm. Your electrician should have tested for htz while testing for voltage. I would recommend re-testing under load and adjust governor to turn 60 cycles to see resulting voltage.

Engine dies

Your carburator is gummed up !
Take the float bowl on the bottom of the carb and spray the main fuel jet out with cleaner, do this to the idle needle valve also. If that don't work pull the carb & take apart & soak overnight in parts cleaner & blow out all ports & orfices with compressed air.
Next time you store your generator with gas in it , use a fuel stabilizer !
Good luck !

NO VIDEO

I have a Samsung 50" plasma, that has been blacking out over the last 6 months. A 9/2005 set. Now its practically unwatchable as it happens 3 times in an hour. Its not heat related - I have a high volume 9" fan activated on TV power on. Turning the set offf/on usually makes it come back for a now short while. Considering to go put it in the back of my pickup and park it in front of Best Buy and discourage Samsung purchases. This is the 2nd Samsung TV I've purchased (the other a 32" tube) I gave to my folks a couple years ago and its gone bad as well. Samsung product may look good, but their video engineers are not.
