Error code one long beep on startup smells like something burning

I noticed the problem developing over a couple of monthe. First, the screen would blink on and off after the power saver had turned it off. Then the machine started beeping on boot up, but I didn't record the beeps. I noticed the text on the boot up screen was wrong, eg the "O"'s had dots in the center. Then it went to "In power saver mode" on boot up. Then the beeps stopped. Then it went to one long beep and would not boot until I pushed the power button off and on. It will boot when I push the power back on a 2nd or 3rd time. When it does boot, running in 1200x1600 32 color, it works fine. Sys Diag found a error in video ram and with the CD player.

have you installed a new hardware earlier? that is most likely the one burning, maybe its not compatible with your system.

Go down about 1/4 of the page to the heading "AMI BIOS beep codes" and look for your BIOS manufacturer. This should help you solve the problem. Please reply which BIOS model you have for more help.

This is a POST error, and if the PC has a annoying pc speaker it usually will beep at this point, the number of beeps would tell you the problem it is having as a POST error if you lookup the beep codes online. If it's not beeping, then it doesn't have a pc speaker.

Usually there would be a error message after this screen also, as there is not, it does seem strange. Try putting the cd of your version of windows in the drive and look for a recovery option. You may have to hit Delete or F2 right at startup and select the CD drive as your first boot device.

Usually in these problems something has happened to the OS or the Hard Drive. But could also be a Ram problem as these are all things checked at the POST screen. It may be best to consult a technical friend or expert before proceeding. Good luck.

Dell beep code meanings

If an error occurs during startup that cannot be reported on the monitor, your computer may emit a beep code that identifies the problem. The beep code is a pattern of sounds: for example, one beep, followed by a second beep, and then a burst of three beeps (code 1-1-3) means that the computer was unable to read the data in NVRAM.
YOu can find complete table on Dell support site.

Most of such errors can be fixed with a system utility software RegInOut

I have a hp compaq desktop. it was working yesterday but when i switched it on today it produced a burning smell and a beeping sound and it was flashing red. when i tried switching it on again it produced...

The red light and beeping was telling you there was a power supply error. Unfortunately the big bang you heard was it dying on you. What probably made the bang was a capacitor. The smell was probably a power transistor.

If it did not cause any damage then you can get a replacement power supply for about $30 and if the shop is in a good mood they will put in in for you for free or maybe $10. This is something you can do yourself as well. When you get a new power supply get one the same size or bigger never get something smaller. By bigger this is it ratting in watts. If the dead one is say a 350 you need to get something rated at 350 or higher. While something smaller might work it will be working harder than it is designed to and will eventually blow as well. A bigger power supply will have extra cooling but will not be putting out near its limit so it runs cooler and lasts longer which is a win win.

No idea if you have warranty but this is definitely covered.

PC WON'T PWR. ON, GREEN PWR. SPPLY LIGHT JUST FLASHES. DO I HAVE A BAD P/S OR WHAT.

Maybe but try searching for computer error codes on the net. Listen for the "beep's", count them and that will give you a good idea of what's happening. Also you might try smelling the back of the tower (around the power supply) if it smells like burning wire, that's the problem.
Good luck

My computer is beeping at me during startup, and will not go past the load screen.... dell b110

The POWER LED on the front of the tower should be solid Green, If Solid Amber or Flashing Amber, there is either a power or MB problem. On the back of the tower are 4 LEDs the when posting normally are all Green. If YYGG for example, then you have a memory failure.
