The blades turn by hand. I had been cutting the grass. Stopped, turned it off, went back later to finish cutting the grass. Started the tractor, drove to the area I was cutting and pushed the PTO to engage blades but nothing happened.

What will cause blades on J.Deere G100 mower to Freely turn by hand without causing Spindles or belt to turn even though Bolts are still tight and when installed Blade turned only if spindle turned

Do Ray:
If the blade engagement lever is in the disengaged position, the belt will be loose, allowing you to turn the blades by hand. If you place the blade engagement lever in the engaged position (with the motor off) it will be hard to turn the blades because of the tension on the belt. If the blades are still easy to turn with the blade engagement lever in the engaged position, you need to replace the blade drive belt!

X520 jd mower trouble

Sounds like a problem with the governor. Start it up. Don't engage the blades. Drive to a hill. Idle all the way down. Try driving up the hill. The motor should pick up when it slows while pulling up the hill. If it doesn't, the governor isn't working right.

When I engage the mower blades it makes a nasty noise, like a bad bearing. I checked the brakes, belts, etc and all is well. Any thoughts?

hi there mrswp211

check out the pulleys from the pto to the deck for noise - if rumbly / noisy replace them , if not
remove pto to deck belt ( make note of belt routing 1st ) then rotate blades and spindles by hand give a good spin you should hear if noisy , grab blades and try to move them fore/ aft to see have movement if they do and they are not smooth and quite spindle bearings are the problem

generally if unit is noisy only when deck engaged bearings will cause this

but make sure pulleys on the top of eack spindle good to and everything is tight
a badly slipping vee belt will make a squeeling noise and somtimes will make the unit shudder

you will have to remove deck to replace bearing(s) , from experience replace mandrell/ spindle assys do both at same time because if one has gone the other wont be far behind - both do same milage and work and quite often if replace bearings only they dont go back in tight .

cheers hope it helps

Husqvarna 17530 stalls when engaging the blade. Seems to run fine else wise/

Does engaging the pedal for the PTO lug the engine down, or does it just die like turning off the key?
If it lugs the engine down, then you need to make sure you can spin the spindle and idler pulleys by pulling the belt by hand. You should be able to slip it around the engine pulley enough with the blade pedal disengaged. Pull the belt up tight so the slack is around the engine pulley and try to spin the blade spindle and idler pulleys.
If it dies like turning off the key, then its likely a safety switch and may require a meter to test which.

The seat switch is has a shunt in the circuit that must be satisfied in order for the rest of the circuit to be happy. Make sure the connections are good, the pins inside the amp connectors will sometimes spread, push out of the lock etc. and if connection is lost will not work. Otherwise a new seat switch will be needed. You might check the PTO switch for continuity, without a diagram or schematic I am not sure how your circuit is wired. you have to have the parking brake engaged to get off the mower while the engine is running and the PTO is Dis-engaged?
I don't know if your "go" pedal eliminated this switch or not. But if with the parking brake engaged and the PTO disengaged, you lift off the seat and it dies, then its the seat switch.

Hope this helped Tim

I hit a hidden log with the blade and it threw the belt. I replace the belt; however, now when I engage the PTO the engine dies.

Your log did more than throw the belt. Something is not able to turn, so when you engage the PTO, the blades stop the motor. Look for another belt jammed, or a bent spindle or piece of log jammed under the deck.

I turn on the mower switch and the motor bogs but the blades do not turn

Since it bogs down, your PTO clutch is engaging, but something driven by the mower belt is stuck. Turn it off and look for simple things first: look under the mower deck for a branch or object jammed in there, or a bent blade. If that's all ok, then take off the mower belt and spin each of the spindles (the pulleys that drive the blades) and also the idler pulleys. If one if stuck or binding badly, you have found the problem. Idler pulley bearing are inexpensive, but spindles are spendy. Good luck! Please rate my solution if helpful, thanks.

Whenever I engage my PTO may engine bogs down, what may be causing the problem?

do you mean when you engage the cutters? if so then chances are on of the blade spindles may be seized or stuck, disconnect the belt from engine pulley and try turn the blade spindle pulleys by hand one at a time to see if they are spinning freely

When I engage the front PTO the engine dies.

There is somthing in the PTO that is binding up. I am assuming the PTO is for the mower blades. The belt(s) could be binding up, not on the pulleys, etc. The blades should turn by hand easily.

Engine chokes & dies when deck PTO engaged...

you need to start with your electric clutch and then backwards to your idler pulleys and deck spindles and bearings.
your electric clutch should almost stop the blades instantly when disengaged ,check the center bolt in the clutch to be sure it is tight also
remove the belt from the electric clutch and energize clutch any noise? sometimes the bearing goes bad in the clutch itself.
check all of your 3 spindles for noise and loose. remove belt and spin by hand and listen for quiet and they should turn free with no binding
check blade tightness
any item the belt goes around needs to be looked at for secure and operable.
