Thanks andrew1872, we got the motor apart and cleaned, and it's working fine (even better without the repair bill).

There is somebody on ebay that sells motor bearings for a Rainbow SE, and they include a diagram schematic of all the Rainbow motor parts

Wow, that motor is one of the most complex in a vacuum and to repair it can be very difficult, if you want to replace it you can but it will be very expensive just for the part. the screws are hidden under that big rubber gasket on the bottom of the machine where the water tank sits. you should also replace that gasket two because it will get ruined when you tear it off.

Chances are the motor died or went bad.
You would have to get a new motor.
You can find one here:

Hi! if i purchase a rainbow vacuum on the net will i regret it?

Can't speak for others, but I sell rainbows on ebay, SE series and E2 models, when I get them in. My units are disassembled, cleaned, inspected and tested to insure quality. My write-ups include good and bad about the unit so the buyer gets NO surprises. They normally sell for around $325.00 (E2 model). The best thing to do is check the sellers rating and feedback for a good score. My score is 100% with all positive feedback. So I know there is at least one place to buy one without concern or regret. I usually list one or two a month: vacmantwo is my ebay member ID. Email address is,
bulu_one@copper.net

SE model will run about $150.00 plus $45.00 s&h
E2 model is about $325.00 plus $45.00 s&h
Prices depend on condition of unit. But I won't sell a unit that is in questionable condition. The outside usually has cosmetic issues, minor scuffing or blemishes, but does not affect the operation of the performance.

Have a Rainbow SE passed down from my Mom who bought it used.Never any trouble, haven't used it for couple of months. When I turn it on now , the motor hums, but doesn't suction. Was afraid to keep it...

Steps to take before assuming the worst:

1. Make sure the latches on either side are locked.
2. You may have it too full of water. You should only fill it no more than 1/4" below the bulb in the center of the water container.
3. Make sure the Hepa filter is in good shape. If there is no air getting through it, than that may be the problem. If the filter is clogged, DO NOT run the vacuum! It will burn the motor up.

I just purchased a rainbow D4C, after purchasing i was told i should have purchased the SE model. whats the difference?

There is only one difference between the D4 and the D4 SE, which stands for D4 (Special Edition). It is the exhaust plug screws in on an SE and snaps in on a regular D4.

Then the SE-PE came along, which stands for (Special Edition-Performance Edition) which has a more powerful motor, with larger motor brushes, for more power and runs on 9.8 amps, where the regular SE and D4 run on 8.8 amps. It also has the newer PN-2 power nozzle, which is very much like the latest E and E2 series Rainbow vacuums, instead of the earlier rectangular ones, that have the bottom metal plate, which will rust. You can upgrade your D4 to one of these, though you will need the electric hose with gas pump style handle, with the built in power corn in it.

They are all D4 models.

I bought my rainbow se vacum 4 years ago and I was using it and suddendly stoped working, I try to on no power I on and off not working at all. what shall i do is there posibility to work again.pls.help...

Hi, there is no reset button on a Rainbow vacuum.

All SE series vacuums have a built in thermal and load fuse on the motor, and if it blew, it has to be replaced, or wired directly, with out it on there.
Motor brushes are usually the source of a non working Rainbow D4 and SE and all model Rainbow vacuums and when they burn out, they usually take the motor armature with them, from excessive heat and flare electrical arking to the armature. It is probably the thermal and load fuse, that is your problem, if you did not smell any electric burning type of smell, before it quit. It could be the power switch, but not as likely as the fuse. If you have any more questions let me know. I am a Rainbow seller, and a Rainbow expert also.

Thank you,
Ralph

Rainbow SE makes Squealing Noise when switching it...
Posted by ray_s51 on Apr 20, 2008
My Rainbow SE works and runs strong but when I switch it on and off for approx. 20 to 30 seconds the motor makes a loud squealing noise. Do I need to oil something or what? Nothing smells, it does not make the noise all the time, but it does more often than not. Thanks

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Rainbow E Series Canister Wet/Dry Vacuum.

The Rainbow has 3 fans in the bottom of the motor and if they are weak they will make noise from the motor unit. Watch out… the repair of the Rainbow may exceed the cost of a new motor of which will solve your problem of noise and separator --- compare the cost and the labor and make a decision. The separator is part of the armature, the separator should be able to be removed and that might be one of the things making noise. As normal maintenance the separator should be removed and cleaned after every use and re-installed, then place a newspaper or towel under the motor unit and turn on the Rainbow and spin the moisture out of the motor unit. This should be done every time you use it. If you have further questions please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer. . How do I remove the pin on my Rainbow Vacuum Model SE clips?

When I used to repair Rainbow SE vacuums for a living, I had a long nail of small diameter that I had filed the end off of just for this purpose. The pin you need to remove is grooved on each end to "catch" in the plastic housing, but a slight tap with a hammer, using this "nail" will do the trick. When you're ready to re-attach it, just tap it again to put it back in place.
