Question about Ruud Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My Ruud Achiever outside compressor is stating and stopping. The fan turns normally for 3-4 seconds and then it cycles over and over. The unit is 5-6 years old. How do I diagnose this before calling in the pro?

Your unit sounds like it is short cycling on low pressure. find the cylindrical thing on the larger line in the unit.it will have two low voltage wires coming out of it. trace those two wires back to where they go and turn off the unit so you can install a jumper across them. turn on the unit and see if it keeps short cycling or if it is running more normal. if it runs more normal then you are most likely low on freon or a slight chance of an airflow restriction

My 4 year old Ruud home a/c compressor stopped working. inside fan blows but compressor won't turn on...what can I do prior to calling the gas company who installed the unit...

Ruud parts warranty from factory is 5 years, the capacitor has possible gone out, it will be in the contol compartment on the out side unit and is a dual run capacitor that controls the compressor and fan motor. Recommend if capacitor is bad to replace entire capacitor. As Stated above the parts are under warranty if under five years old. To verify age the date code is in the serial number after the "F" **** week/year of manufacture. Also outside unit has independent power supply so check fuses if any and circuit breaker.

Ruud Achiever® Series 13 SEER the fan will not spin I have checked the breaker is there a reset button inside the unit?

There is a reset button on the outside of the unit near where the tubing and wiring comes into the unit. The button is encased with a red plastic cover. If the unit is making noise but the fan is not spinning, the problem may be related to the fan itself. First with the unit turned of, see if the fan spins freely. Then fire the unit up again to A/C and see if the fan is not moving. If not, carefully nudge the fan blade with screw drive in the direction it normally moves. if the fan engages, most likely the bushings are old and need to be replaced; RUUD may only sell the entire fan assembly.

My Ruud Achiever 90 Plus not blowing cooled air

Look on the condensor, (outdoor unit) at the very bottom of the rear panel and you should find a red reset button. push it. If that does not solve the problem, and the outdoor unit is running (make sure both the fan AND the compressor are running) then you are looking at a low refridgerant issue and possibly dirty coils.

In that case, clean the coils and have refridgerant added.

My fan outside will not turn off. I have a Ruud Achiever 10 unit. I cleaned the coils on the unit outside and the filter for the furnace. The unit does cool.

Is the compressor also running or just the fan? If both are running, you've probably got a freon leak and the system isn't cooling properly so it runs continuously trying to reach the thermostat set-point.

If only the fan is stuck on, you've most likely got a stuck fan relay. Replacements are available at HVAC supply stores and most will sell to the public. Not a real difficult fix but BE SURE to pull the electical disconnect AND flip the breaker OFF before you attempt any repairs.

It sounds like your condenser fan motor may be locked up or the capacitor that helps give the condenser fan motor a kick to get it started may be defective. Try turning your system on and using a long screwdriver try to push the fan blade on the condenser fan motor to see if it will run normally if you give it the starting boost it needs. If it does run at full speed and doesn't over heat or start and then slow down then you probably only need to replace a simple 10-12$ capacitor. If it barely turns, makes an odd humming sound or overheats etc. then you will have to replace the condenser fan motor. This is assuming that the outdoor condenser has the 220v supplied and the 24v supplied to the compressor relay, that the compressor relay is engaged and suppling 220v to the condenser fan motor.

Fan keep,s blowing

Your thermostat is calling for blower, your fan relay is stuck, or that model had a time delay blower solid state board on it which had the blower relay on it, and it could be bad. I would turn the power off to all of your system for a few minutes and see if this could make something happen.

Ruud heat pump outside unit trips circuit breaker

Check your wiring between the contactor and compressor for a short to ground, or check the compressor windings for short to ground.
With the Tstat off, the contactor should be open so the only way for the compressor to be trying to do anything is if the 110 volts from the unbroken side are traveling through the compressor to ground. Since 110v is not enough to run it, the overload is kicking it out, cooling off, and repeating the cycle. When you kick on the Tstat, the contactor is supplying voltage directly to ground without going through the resistence of the compressor windings and kicking the breaker.
Post back and let me know what you find.
