This works with my phone.
Switch phone off alltogether by holding down the red handset button (the one with a handset icon, second one down on the right)
Connect the usb cable to your pc, then to the phone. If all is well the phone should come on and then the pc recognizes the phone.you should have an extra icon in 'my computer' on the pc.
