Could be the power supply not supplying enough juice to the spindle motor. Make sure it's not plugged into a "multi-plug" adapter.
Could be the spindle motor as well, or the disk sensor.

Let me know should you find something else...

Won't play, just keeps skipping discs

Good morning Lori.

My troubleshooting thoughts run something like this:
  1. It sounds like it's skipping on every CD.
  2. This is (according to the manual Denon DCM 390 Operating Instructions Manual Troubleshooting a cauousel-type system, so it has a tray that you manually place CDs into, rather than a cassette that you put all the CDs into and then insert into the player.
  3. Most of the manual Troubleshooting section puts the blame for discs not playing upon dirty or damaged discs - you're told to re-load it, clean the disc, try another disc.
  4. If this is just one set of discs, then it's worth it to pull out at least a couple and try other discs that are clean, don't have scratches, and, hopefully, that you know work on another player. If they work, then, kudos to the manual, the discs may need cleaning or replacement.
  5. If you're playing home-burned CDs, you may need to finalize them for play. Computer CD burners can often give you a lot more leeway in what they're willing to play, since there is a much more sophisticated bunch of code running the burner that will have some expectation that in-process discs might end up there.
  6. Last, but, IMO, most likely - steady skipping on every CD can mean that the CD laser lens is dirty. Over time, dust on CDs or from the air drawn through the chassis can build up on the lens, which has a fairly small gap from lens to Disc surface. In something like a DiscMan or other portable CD player, the lens is usually pretty obvious and can be blown off with some canned air or brushed with a micro-fiber camera lens cleaning brush. In this case, it's what I suspect is the problem. Depending on what gear you might have, or how much you'd want to spend on it, what I'd suggest to try fixing this possibility would be :
    1. Use a commercial CD Lens cleaner. They'll likely run 6 to 10 dollars. A list here Amazon com cd lens cleaner Electronics has lots of possibilities. You'll want one of the ones that looks like a CD with a small brush attached to the bottom, possibly some fluid. You'll put it in the player, hit play, it'll at least attempt to play for like 5 to 30 seconds, and end. The brush will be spun past the lens multiple times, removing dust / gunk buildup.
    2. Use canned air. I'm talking commercial stuff expressly meant for cleaning computers and other gear that will suffer from a blast of oil-laden air from a garage air-tool compressor. Examples here Amazon com canned air Electronics
    3. Open the system up. I can't give too much guidance other than I did it years ago on my system - make sure it's unplugged before starting. Remove screws attaching black cover to chassis, and you may be able to get in with a brush to clean the lens. Don't go this direction unless you're confident of your DIY skills.
    4. In any case, try to stick with dry cleaning methods like the cleaner disc or canned air. If you do anything with direct contact, stick to clean microfiber cloth or brushes, and be gentle - no scrubbing motions. It's a tiny lens, and a scratch or mis-alignment from forceful handling will be the end of it. If a liquid must be involved and isn't part of a commercial kit, nothing but distilled water. Many, if not most, of the CD lenses are molded plastic, and glass cleaners, likely as not, will attack the lens surface and roughen or fog it.
  7. Last note - the reviews on Amazon for this unit are not kind. It sounds like the skipping and failure to play is not uncommon with this particular Denon model. If the unit is still under warranty, I'd grab the opportunity to have someone fix it for real and deal with any faulty mechanisms. If not, you have little to lose with the above, but the reviews suggest that replacing with the same model might not be the best idea.
Good Luck, and Happy Holidays

Sony 5 disc cd player won't play 5 cds but plays just 1 disc

Check the mode of operation. There can be a setting where it just plays one disc. Random or mixed will give you more songs to get to other discs.

We can't get the factory 6 disc cd player to load more than 1 disc. What is the sequence for loading additional discs?

The following is the owner's manual for your 2004 Dodge Neon:

http://www.dodge.com/en/owners/manuals/index.html?year=2004&nameplate=Neon

P.99 describes how to load discs:

1. Select and press any numbered button without an illuminated light above it.
2. Insert the CD while the light above the chosen button is flashing and the two lights on either side of the slot are illuminated.
3. Upon insertion, the CD will begin to play, and both the button light and the lights in the corner of the loading slot will illuminate.
4. Repeat the process for loading any additional CDs. The CD playe rwill stop while additional CDs are loaded.

Playing Discs
The radio will show the CD number, the CD track number, and the Track Time Elapsed while the radio is in the CD mode. IF more than one CD is loaded in the changer, the changer will automatically play the next disc after playing the last track of the current disc.

Wow, that's a lot of typing.
I didn't know the 2004 Dodge Neon had such a nice changer.
Good luck.
