Whenever i'm on the dashboard or playing with the arcade, the picture is perfect. If i insert a game disk, the game plays, but has vertical lines on the screen making it impossible to see. It's also leaving a sort of ring on my game disk, its like the reaction petrol has when it mixes with water....you get that wavey effect. Any idea's guys?

Perhaps the rendering engine is corrupt? Does the board experience any crashing or blue screens inside windows or any other gui? is it only giving you trouble in the game? Perhaps the game was written for an older chipset and cannot be rendered on this platform.
Some game are compatible with the new xbox 360. They are called backwards compatible and you do need to flash upgrade the OS on the new xbox 360 system.
You need to go to the xbox website and go to support and download the flash update then burn it to disk and put it on the xbox to update the software. Again not all old games are compatible with the new xbox system. If your buying used games like I do make sure it says bc next to the title before buying them.
Here is the link to the upgrade
