Question about Western Digital 250GB MyBook External USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive

221 GB Free on MyBook - Error states not enough space for backup

I get an error every morning stating that there wasn't enough space for the backup. My Windows XP desktop has 134 GB total harddrive (under My Computer, anyway) and 61.4 GB free space.

My Book shows 465 GB Total Size (again, in My Computer) and 221 GB Free Space. It has run backups before - so this should be updates to that backup.

I must have the settings wrong. MyBook will accept drag and drop updates - but says it doesn't have enough space for the nightly automatic updates.

I'm hoping there's a common error I've made in the update selections - any thoughts?

Thanks in advance! Trying to backup one external harddrive with around 65 GB of data onto another external harddrive (WD) with 176 GB FREE space (250 total). System is NTFS, but every time: not enough space???

I have a similar problem. There is still more than 400 gb free space with WD mybook, and no problem with small files. However when I try to move recorded TV files from desktop to WD mybook 500gb, I get the same error message " not enough space" if the file is big - about 5 gb or larger. I don't have this problem with Segate and Iomega external HD. I believe it's related with HD format, but I don't know how to reformat again.

I was glad to see your question on the website, but disappointed with no answer by anyone so far. I am going to keep looking for an answer. Good luck with you.

It may be due to the file system.  If formated as FAT32 files larger than 4gb may not transfer.  Try reformatting as NTFS to fix the problem.

Is the drive formatted as FAT32?

If so, and your backup is more than 4GB, it will not be able to write the file to the drive.

Open a Command Prompt (Start | Run | CMD) and at the prompt type:
CONVERT V: /FS:NTFS /X
Where V: is the drive letter of your My Book.

That will convert it to NTFS and it will be able to handle files larger than 4GB.

I want to back up my hard drive onto my Elements external drive. The computer says that the Elements 3607 does not have enough space. What do I do?

Well first of all check how many free space you have on your ext. drive. If you DO have enough to back-up your files, then i would suggest you right clicking on your ext. drive, choose properties and format it,but beware, formating will delete ALL your data on external drive.
If you think i was usefull, click on Thumbs up button, cheers!

If the disc is formatted to FAT32. You will be limited to 4GB files. NTFS is limited to 16 exibytes. Which is huge even by todays standards.

No space error

This is due to the file transfer limitations bound by the file format FAT32 (no files larger than 4GB and no folders that contain more than 1000 files). Try formatting the drive to NTFS.

Cant download large files to my book

The controller board in Mybook might not support files over 4 gb. Check with the manufacturer if there are any new drivers for you product to solve your dilema. You could also just buy a cheap external case for the drive in the mybook and swap it out. None of the new cases have these limitations and you can get them online for less than 20 bucks. I like MAD Dog cases myself. I hope this helps you.
