Why is the engine light continually on in my subaru outback 2000 and what is a bank one sensor?

Your engine has oxygen sensors mounted on the exhaust lines, one before and one after the catalytic convertor. These determine the amount of oxygen in exhaust gases. This information is used by the ECU to determine the exact A/F ratio. Bank one is for cylinder 1 and 2 exhaust lines.

Hi pitched whine on fan in 2004 rav4. no noise when the fan is off

Best thing to do is replace the fan motor. You can get one at any autoparts major chain store. They are about 100 dollars. The problem is either a bearing or the brushes in motor. You can disassemble it and see about the bearing or bushings or the brushes if you are inclined to getting dirty and using your hands to take things apart. The fan is behind the glove box and can be removed easily. Just take out the four screws that hold it on the plenum. Unhook the power connection and the whole thing should come out in your hands. Then you can replace or repair it.

Fan is running all the time just started 1 day ago after computer fixed a problem

All the computer fans run 99.999999% of the time. It may be getting louder and therefore more noticeable. Dust build up over time can make your computer running hotter which would require the fans to run faster if they are varible speed vans (have a 3 or 4 pin connector)

Does this fan have a brushed motor? Thanks Phil

The Exhaust Fan/Video Card System Fan Kit from StarTech is an add-in cooling fan designed to fit in the PCI or ISA expansion slots of any computer. It is used to exhaust warm air out preventing problems due to overheating components. The exhaust fan inlet faces adjacent PCI or AGP cards and makes a great video card cooler for hot running 3D accelerator cards like the Voodoo TNT2 GeForce256 and others. A quiet running brushless DC motor coupled with a high efficiency blade design is capable of moving 36 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air. Power is supplied to the fan using a standard LP4
hope this helps

I recently bought a Belkin multi purpose power adaptor to replace the original which had failed. This has melted and made the laptop unusable as it has melted all over the power outlet. PC World claim it...

If the POWER ADAPTOR failed and that is what melted then the ADAPTOR is probably at fault.

Nearly all GOOD power adaptors have thermal and/or current overload protection in some form.

If it was an AUTO-SENSE input voltage type then it failed in a BIG way.
If it was NOT auto-sense for input voltage then it may have been set for a lower voltage than was being supplied by your wall outlet.

If it was the latter then it was up to you to select the correct input voltage. For anything else I would be kicking some @ss.

Deal only with a full store manager and nobody else and document everything that is said. You didn't mention which country you are in but a lot of countries have consumer service departments and health and safety departments that can quite often take these sorts of thing up.

You may also find websites that list re-called or defective products.
If yours shows up on one of those sites print out the info and take that in with you.

The car keeps over heating ,going thru at least 25lts of coolant per week

The engine is leaking cooant some where and it is a big leak.
Could be from a cracked radiator or heating hose, or a leaky radiator, or radiator cap or into the oil sump, this will cause the oil to change to a milky color. It could also leak coolant into the combustion chamber pass a faulty head gasket.
Fill the radiator and put the car in park and run the engine until it reaches running tempurature, open the bonnet and look around the engine and under the car to see where the coolant is leaking. Also have a look at the exhaust tail pipe and the oil dip stick for color changes to the oil.

My Acer Aspire 5000 is overheating and shutting down but the fan seems to be working. Besides telling me to take it to a computer repair shop, any suggestions?

If you put your hand up to the exhaust port of the fan you should feel a lot of air blowing, if not you need to clean off the part of the heatsink that the fan blows into, its blocked by dust.
