NEC NDH-81 DVD Recorder won't start

When I power up the recorder, the "Please wait..." message appears and that's it. This message doesn't go away and the unit won't respond to any commands. Have tried cycling power off / on. Any ideas?

-   Reads the disc and then says "Uknown disc please check" and opens the door, has no problem playing DIVX though-   dinkykitty
