Question about ASTVision 5B 15 in.CRT Conventional Monitor

1 Answer

I see two screens on my desktop.

I am seeing two screens side by side on my AST 15" CRT monitor.I am running win98 and when the computer boots up I see just the one Win98 start up screen. When I shut the computer down, I only see the one Windows 98 is shutting down screen.
How do I get just one screen on my desktop? I can not see the print on the two screens well enough to read it.
Thank you !

You are using a screen resolution that is not supported by your monitor. Start the computer in safe mode and open display properties. What ever resolution and color depth is (usually 640x480 and 16 colors), click OK button. Restart the computer. Go to display properties and increase the color depth to the maximum value. Set the resolution to 800x600. Restart the machine. Do you see double screens? No? Great! Now try increasing the resolution to the next level. (1024x768). When you click 'apply' you will be give 15 seconds to say it is OK. So if you see double screens, do not click anything. Display will revert to 800x600 resolution (and you will see only a single screen!)

Computer won't boot up

Does it sound like the computer booted up except the screen is black. Do you hear fans running, the hard drive spinning? Maybe the system booted up, but the screen has an issue.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

Out of range

Boot through Safe Mode by pressing F8 once you start the system.
and select Safe Mode in the options to boot through it.
On the Desktop right click on the empty area of the desktop and select the properties, click on the Settings tab, on the screen resolution, move the pointer to the lower resolution, Press Apply and OK. Restart the system.

I have lg studioworks 552v monitor connected to a windows 98 computer . the screen had some problem before now rectified but i had 256 colour running now after repair there is only 16 colour . how to get...

In Win98, you will get only 16 colors if you don't install the VGA driver. It is not a problem with your Monitor. Install the VGA driver. If you can't find the driver (we may be able to help to find it), try replacing the VGA.

LCD monitor goes blank

It appears that the display resolution set in your display properties is out of the range that the LCD can display.

Try this.

Boot to the ENABLE VGA MODE by pressing F8 to get the Windows Boot Menu. If you can get to the desktop, then go to display properties, and see if you can change the resolution to higher settings and maintain video. (If the video blanks out, then it should revert to the previous setting in 15 seconds)

I would try booting the computer in safe mode (if it's windows) and adjust your display settings. It sounds as though it is trying to display from your computer something that it cannot properly.
