I am seeing two screens side by side on my AST 15" CRT monitor.I am running win98 and when the computer boots up I see just the one Win98 start up screen. When I shut the computer down, I only see the one Windows 98 is shutting down screen.
How do I get just one screen on my desktop? I can not see the print on the two screens well enough to read it.
Thank you !

Re: I see two screens on my desktop.
You are using a screen resolution that is not supported by your monitor. Start the computer in safe mode and open display properties. What ever resolution and color depth is (usually 640x480 and 16 colors), click OK button.
Restart the computer. Go to display properties and increase the color depth to the maximum value. Set the resolution to 800x600. Restart the machine.
Do you see double screens? No? Great! Now try increasing the resolution to the next level. (1024x768). When you click 'apply' you will be give 15 seconds to say it is OK. So if you see double screens, do not click anything. Display will revert to 800x600 resolution (and you will see only a single screen!)

Boot through Safe Mode by pressing F8 once you start the system. and select Safe Mode in the options to boot through it. On the Desktop right click on the empty area of the desktop and select the properties, click on the Settings tab, on the screen resolution, move the pointer to the lower resolution, Press Apply and OK. Restart the system.
Yes, there is one solution. Open the monitor case, then see for Flyback transformer ( with cable attached to the CRT Tube with rubber cap).Then using screw driver (+ or - ), adjust the screen positions until you get the best brightness.Usually it's on the lower part of Flyback transformer, on the upper side, it's used to adjust the focus.
In Win98, you will get only 16 colors if you don't install the VGA driver. It is not a problem with your Monitor.
Install the VGA driver. If you can't find the driver (we may be able to help to find it), try replacing the VGA.
It appears that the display resolution set in your display properties is out of the range that the LCD can display.
Boot to the ENABLE VGA MODE by pressing F8 to get the Windows Boot Menu. If you can get to the desktop, then go to display properties, and see if you can change the resolution to higher settings and maintain video. (If the video blanks out, then it should revert to the previous setting in 15 seconds)
You can see your monitor ranges ;
right click desktop -> properties -> settings -> monitor
You'll see Screen refresh rate here
under the that there is a box "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" click that.
Now computer shows your monitor range in list. When you select bigger value different than list , gives error " OUT OF RANGE "
