I have the same problem. When i turn on my labtop, there is power, i can hear the labtop running, see the blue light on the power, but nothing on the screen. I took it back to where I bought it, Circuit City on 11/7/08. The promise date was 11/17/08. Haven't got my labtop back it, it's 12/15/08 now. Called Circuitcity every week. At first they said it's the sound card that caused the blank screen. Called them the next week and they said it's the motherboard, they are waiting for HP to send in a motherboard which is on backordered. Called Circuitcity again on 12/7/08, they told me HP got the motherboard, so Circuitcity is waiting for the motherboard. I'm running out of patience with HP and Circuitcity. Very bad customer service at Circuitcity could at least update me on the status of my labtop which has been there over a month now.

Losing faith on HP products. My brother had an HP as well, at first the wireless card went out. Bought an USB wireless adapter, then the motherboard went out after two weeks. Bought an HP external hard drive, after a few months using it, the hard drive was not working. So I dont recommend HP anymore.

Anyone with the same problems know what's going with HP?

    No more HP!

Try going to safe mode manually. The steps mentioned below will help you accessing the safe mode

Step 1: Shut down your PC completely.
Step 2: Turn on the Power button.
Step 3: As soon as you turn it on start hitting the F8 key on your keyboard until you get to a black screen called "Windows Advanced option". (If you don't get to that that screen but you end up reaching the blue screen than that means you have delayed in hitting the F8 key. start again from step 1.)
Step 4: As soon as you reach "Windows Advanced option" use your down arrow keys to choose an option called "Safe Mode/Safe mode with networking".
Step 5: Select that and HIT ENTER.

I am trying to diagnose a problem with my son's laptop screen going blank. I shall try to describe the symptoms. 1. When plugged into an external monitor, everything works fine. 2.The laptop screen...

Have you check the cable that goes from the screen at the motherboard? Usually this cable is not visible; it is hidden it one of the joints between screen and main body of the notebook. This cable is the most common problem in the cases that the notebook keeps on working although the screen is black. You can check it by opening slowly - slowly the screen all the way up and closing again slowly. If there is a cut at the cable your screen will get black at a specific slope.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.
If you are satisfied, accept my solution.
