Hi,

Based on your description, the problem could either be:

  • CCF (cold cathode florescent) lamp; and/or
  • inverter.
Since the T42 works fine attached to an external monitor, we can rule out the video card. Similarly, since the laptop's display shows (even if momentarily), then the video to LCD interface in all likelihood is also OK. Again, the display showing is significant, it tells us that the components are working except they stop for some reason and most likely it is heat related. Possibly a cold solder, a loose connection and/or a dried up capacitor. You could actually verify this be shining a flashlight diagonally across the screen (once the T42 has booted) and some semblance of the desktop albeit dark would be slightly visible.

What is required is opening the LCD lid/panel to perform repairs. This of course would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

My HP laptop was working fine, and then suddenly the screen went blank. When I reboot, the power light stays on and you can hear the hard drive spinning, but the screen stays blank.

Hi,

unhook all usb cables and power cable, take out battery. Hold down Power button for 60 seconds, which will get rid of all static electricity. Plug in all cables again and check.

If still facing problem there will be some connection issue inside the lap.
Please let me know whether this works or not.

You might want to give this a try. Start Menu - Choose Control Panel. Then choose Power Options. You should have several options depending on performance or saving power. Choose Change Plan Settings, and adjust the display brightness to suit your needs.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like the lcd is toast.

Hook the laptop up to an external monitor and see if you get normal video. If you do, chances are it's the lcd. You'll have to replace it.

IBM T40 Screen goes off after few seconds

survival,
Here's a couple of things to try:
Power down and remove the battery. Leave it out until you are done with the following procedures. Remove the memory modules and put only one back in. Try to power up. If that works, replace the other one and power up. If that works, you're fixed!
If not, try to power up in safe mode and see what happens. If it comes up, try running diagnostics on the HDD. If that fails, try reseating the hard drive.

Let me know how you're coming along on this. May be able to come up with more ideas, if needed.
