Absolutely I will tackle this project. I have been repairing consumer products on a personal level for 30 + years and have a small shop in my basement so no fear digging into this item. It is nice however to go in informed if possible so what ever you have I am sure will help.

I do have the service manual.

I don't have a pdf file for fungus in an akai, but you will need to remove the 2 tubes from the set, take off the cover for the reservoir and dump out the fluids and then fill them back up. you will then need to know how to do the convergence alignment after you put the tubes back in. This is a involved process, if you want to tackle this on your own let me know and we will see what we can do.

What does it mean if the color looks red?

That is usually caused by bad CRT coolant in the green and Blue CRTs which males the Red CRT dominate. Looking into the lenses of the blue and green will verify just compare them to the red. If they all look the same then the coolant is good and you have a Red CRT issue which will require replacement in most cases.

If so I believe your CRT liquid coolant has gone bad and needs replaced.
How to diagnose bad CRT Coolant:

Note: This problem will only affect the GREEN and BLUE picture tubes. The RED CRT is never affected, because the wavelength of the red light does not promote this algae growth
General Symptoms: Washed out, blurry picture, red portions mostly OK, GREEN images have halos, BLUE portions of images may have halos or be missing entirely.Turn the color level control all of the way down and remove the screen and/or the cabinet that contains the mirror. (different for different models) Do not turn the set off or the color level control will reset to preset levels. Look directly into the picture tube lens while the set is on. First look at the RED CRT. Observe the scan lines in the picture. These same lines should also be present in the green and blue picture tubes.
After looking at the RED CRT for comparison, look into the GREEN or BLUE CRTs. If it is contaminated, it will look like there is a layer of film that you have to look thru to see the picture. There may also be swirls and other various contaminates forming. If it is not as clear and sharp as the RED CRT, it is contaminated, and you should change the coolant fluid. IF you wish to tackle this I will supply more information and instructions. This task is medium to hard for non trained people.
Let me know if you wish to get the instructions on changing the fluid.

Why does the tv look have a red tint all the time

The CRT coolant is needing replacement in the blue and green CRTs which make the red dominate. You can see the coolant is bad by looking in all three lenses you will see that the red is clear and bright where as the blue and green will be hard to see through which makes the colors dim. Replace the coolant should solve the issue. You can get the Phillips CRT coolant kit from www.tvrepairworld.com which contains the coolant for all three CRTs and the CD with instructions.

replace the coolant in the CRts . The blue and green coolant gets congealed and causes the red to become dominate and the picture will be dull. You can get the Phillipos CRT coolant kit at the following link the Kit contains the instructions on CD

I have the akai model # ptf492s and the white colors are yellow

I'm almost positive the problem is you have fungus in the CRTs. I know this sounds strange, but it's true. Basically there is coolant fluid in the lamps that develops fungus over time and turns yellow. It should be clear. If you take the back off the television, you will see the 3 lenses (red, green, blue) Each of the lens is held on with 3 screws. Remove the adjustable lens and look at each CRT. Shine a flashlight in they should look white. From what I've read, blue develops the problem first, then green. You can replace the fluid. Look up TV coolant replacement online. It's not to difficult, but you cannot get any of the fluid on the circuit boards or it will ruin it. Mine had a lot of fungus in the blue CRT and a little in the green. The picture looks 100% better now. Good Luck.

Red and blue faded

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

White colors schemes seem off white color or brownish color and blue has green tint or baby blue color. .

Check the coolant in all three crt's as chances are it is contaminated (should be crystal clear). If brown (beer color), replace coolant in all three crt's and perform convergence adjust. Picture should be like new!!!

Good Luck!!!

I guess it's missing blue. Even if you see the blue crt working it's not enough and focalised. replace the coolant in it and also check if you have some coolant leak on the crt pcb.

Replace the green projection gun

I have almost the same problem, but it was with the blue CRT tube. The coolant leaked onto the underlying PCB and caused short-circuits and sparking or arking. I purchased an exact replacement PCB for the CRT, but I suspected most of its coolant had gone, so I need to re-fill the coolant for the blue CRT to stay cool.
