There are three possibilities for this:
1) The battery is dead
2) The hard drive went bad, or
3) The screen is shot and does't work so the above two might not be the case.
Try replaceing the battery as that is the cheapest ($5) then a new screen ($12) and then the hard drive and depending on what ipod you have it can go from $50 - $125.
