I did do some research and did find the problem. There was a burnt section on the control panel. I would suggest most ppl not to try and repair this themselves unless you have a good grasp on electrical repairs. I myself was able to fix it and microwave is working great

removed original bulbs which are glued in. they both broke and I guess
a filament was still loose and when the wife turned on the lights they
sparked, I replaced the bulbs and they still don't work - ***
everything else does *** i looked up info and belive it is the fuse -
i removed the control panel but can not locate the fuse. can you help?
    thanks

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Just be sure to use thin wire (about 30 AWG) which will only handle about an amp or so of current.

This thin wire acts as a fuse so your board is not severely damaged further "upstream" (or relays blown) if it happens again.

MAKE this test and fix it. God bless you

  1. Light bulbIf your microwave light bulb is not working, perhaps it has blown. The first step is to replace the bulb and power on the microwave. If this does not correct the issue, the next step is to check the socket and wiring to verify if that is the problem.
  2. Light bulb socket & main control boardIf your microwave light bulb is not working after the installation of a new bulb, check the light socket as well as the wiring to ensure they are properly operating. If these sources are functioning properly, the next step is to check for a faulty control board as a possible root cause to your microwave light bulb malfunction.

How do i change the bulbs on a jvm1870sk03 microwave

That's covered on pages 35 & 36 of the owner's manual here.

Cooktop Light/Night Light

On models JVM1850, JNM1851, DVM1850 and
EMO4000, replace the burned-out bulb with a 120 volt,
40-watt incandescent bulb (WB36X10003), available
from your GE supplier.

On models JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM2050 and
JVM3670, replace the burned-out bulb with a 120 volt,
20-watt halogen bulb (WB36X10213), available from
your GE supplier.

To replace the bulb(s), first disconnect the
power at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel
or pull the plug. *

Remove the screw at the left edge of the light
cover and push on the right edge of the cover
to open.

Be sure the bulb(s) to be replaced are cool
before removing. After breaking the adhesive
seal, remove the bulb by either gently turning
(for models JVM1850, JNM1851, DVM1850 and
EMO4000) or pulling straight out (for models
JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM2050 and JVM3670).

Replace with the same size and type bulb.

Raise the light shield and replace the screw.
Connect electrical power to the oven.

Oven Light

Replace the burned-out bulb with a 120 volt, 20-watt
halogen bulb (WB36X10213), available from your
GE supplier.

To replace the oven light, first disconnect the
power at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel
or pull the plug.

Remove the top grille by taking out the screws
on top of the grille that hold it in place and
sliding the grille to the left (opening the door
makes grille removal easier).

Next, remove the light cover.

On some models, the light cover is located
in the center of the top opening. Remove the
screw that secures the light cover and lift the
cover off.

On some models, the light cover is located at the
left of the top opening. Lift the cover off.

Pinch the clips that hold the light socket in
place and lift the socket out.

Remove the bulb from the light socket by
pulling straight out. Replace with the same size
and type bulb, then replace the light socket and
cover.

Replace the grille and screws. Connect electrical
power to the oven.

* If your control board was damaged (lights won't come on, won't go off, fan or turntable not working right) after a cooktop light bulb blew or was inserted or removed while power was on, see here.

Replace Microwave Light

Apparently there's a flaw in the design. My light has gone out/ been changed roughly evry 9 months. No longer under warranty and cost to have someone come in and replace is outrageous. Light bulb is located on top of the oven. You need to remove the top to get at it. Looked fairly easy.

Dont waste time blaming the wife. It does not pay. LOL

Call GE customer care. Give them the model and they can 1. Tell you what bulbs to use, 2. Ship you the bulbs or, 3. Send you another owners manual which I hope you will keep in a safe place.

Allways unplug when your working inside a microwave, you will most likely have to replace the bulb again and also the fan, or anything else that is damaged, you will need to inspect the microwave for broken parts.

Il get you a few links to repair parts.

Yes it just unscrews.  Unplug the microwave first!  Then use some needle nose pliers and put them inside the base open the pliers to put pressure on each side of the base.  Now turn the base counterclockwise.  Let me know how it turns out.
