From what you said, I assume that you are talking about the tiny little lock found on the SD card.
If you still have this problem, try formatting the SD card with your computer and try it with the camera...
cheers,

Memory card locked

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

No. The A610 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. It will not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

When I put my SanDisk 8Gb card into the camera it reads Card Lock.

This assumes that your camera is compatible with SDHC cards. Not all Canon cameras are, but as you didn't specify the model of your camera I can't tell you whether yours is or not.

Memory card error with 4gb card

Your camera was made before 4GB SDHC card format came out. Sorry, but a Powershot A610 can only work with 2GB or less standard SD cards. Fortunately, these are very inexpensive these days. If your local store doesn't carry them, then here's some from Amazon.

Will a 16gb SDHC card fit in and work in my Cannon Powershot A610 camera

No. The A610 works with MMC and SD cards, not SDHC cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work.

Your camera, introduced in 2006, cannot use SDHC cards, but only 'standard' SD cards up to 2 GB.

You should always format the cards (if needed) in the camera and not in the computer to ensure compability.

Sandisk memory card

Has this card EVER worked with your camera? Since you didn't mention the model number of the Canon, it's possible that you have a compatiblity issue here. Most 4GB SD cards these days are actually SDHC cards, which store memory differently (in sectors, like a hard disc drive, rather than bytes, like your main memory). All SDHC compatible cameras also support SD cards, but cameras sold before the SDHC standard was created will not support SDHC memory cards.

There's a chance that Canon has a firmware upgrade to solve this. You would have to look on the Canon USA web site for this, based on the model number of your camera.
