Question about Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop

I tried the process

Techgem,

I tried your Bios process however the system still stops after safe mode spash screen comes up(where you have OS ver info at the top and safe mode on bottom corners). But only the mouse shows and I can not do any other interaction. When I went into the Bios there is no default it is only the Dell standard info.

First I will suggest you to Return BIOS settings to their default levels. An overclocked or misconfigured BIOS can cause all sorts of random issues, including Black screen
After that restart your computer in safe mode by press and hold F8 keys until you get Advanced Options menu screen.Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, and then press Enter, your computer will boot automatically to safe mode
Inn safe mode Update your graphic drivers from your system manufacturer site
If this is helpless then simply get Reginout that cleans your computer of temp files, history and cookies. Its also used to fix any registry errors.
Hopefully it will help you

Sony pcv-rs520 boot bios - need BIOS entry key for changing boot drive

Should be the F2 key to enter setup. Make sure you are pressing this key during the VAIO spash screen on boot. If you press it after the spash screen the bois will not load and you will have to power cycle the computer to get the spash sreen back and try again.

My gateway desktop model gt5026e shuts down/reboots automatically. i cleaned the cooling fans and made sure they were working properly but it still reboots at random,

To isolate the issue, try to boot to the BIOS screen by tapping on F2 on boot. If it goes to the BIOS and does not restart, you have good hardware components. If the issue is still eminent in the BIOS, then you have a problem with your processor. You need to have it replaced.
If it is not hardware, we need to further isolate. Boot to Safe Mode by tapping on F8 on boot. Choose either safe mode or safe mode with networking.
No issues on safe mode: then the problem is with the advanced software. Try to remember when the issue started. Restore your computer setting to previous date before the issue started. (start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore). Once you have booted to normal mode, do not forget to update your security software and scan your system.
If there are issues with safe mode: There is bigger problem with your OS. Try system restore as well. Hopefully this fixes the issue. If it does not, you need to reformat your system.
Good Luck!

Dell optiplex 760 won't go into safe mode

It sounds as though your PF keys are disabled by the BIOS settings. Try this:
Upon cold start or reboot get to the BIOS setup. You may have to press F2 or delete, or whatever key the first POST messages instruct you to use. Different BIOS manufacturers use different keys, and you have to be quick to interrupt the boot process using the correct key. If you fail to determine what key it is, reboot once again, until you see/read what key does the job.
Next, once you're into the setup screens, look for a section where you can set/deny access to the F8, F9, F10 etc keys during the boot process.
Make sure you ENABLE them, following the instructions on what keys to use to set/reset these choices. Make sure you SAVE AND EXIT.
On the next reboot, upon the disappearance of all POST messages, make sure you press the F8 key repeatedly until you see your OS boot options menu, among which you'll find Safe Mode.
Good luck!

Next step is remove hard drive and see if it is recognized in another computer. The Hard Drive could just be bad, but you need to rule out the motherboard drive controllers that could also be bad. Also try a known good drive in your system.

Have you tried to go into Safe Mode when the computer first starts? As soon as the initial Dell splash screen is displayed, start tapping the F8 key. A start-up menu will eventually be shown. Use the down arrow key to highlight Safe Mode at the top of the menu and then press <enter>. The computer should start in Safe Mode. It will take a short time. Once it has started, a window will come up telling you that it is in safe mode. Read the message carefully. If you click OK, you will go into Safe Mode. If you click Cancel, you will be able to do a system restore. Click Cancel and follow the process for a system restore. Restore to a date before you did the downloading. It is a pretty straight forward process. The computer will go through the restore process and restart when it is finished.

Good luck, and please let me know how it works out!

Is this still under warranty? If not then you'll just need to buy another HDD (hard drive device) and connect that one where the old was. Re-install XP or Vista. Conact Gateway or go to the Gateway web site to see what was hardware was supported for your system.

HDD IDE/EIDE or SATA/SATA II
OS XP or Vista

After you find out the info just install the new HDD, and install the OS. I only recommend doing this since you can't even get into the Safe Mode. When everything is back up and running you can also re-attach the old drive to what is called Slave or CS (cable select) this is more automatic process. Then you'll be able to recover any data missing that you need that was on the older drive.

Reboot your system-press and hold F8 until you get a list of options-select Safe Mode-enter.Your system will run in Safe Mode, giving you a dropdown list as it progresses-check where it stops. In this way you can establish wether you have a corrupted or incompatible driver and which {Graphic ie} stop the system. You will have to reload the OS to solve the problem. If you cannot even boot into Safe Mode, your drive very likely crashed.Happy landing.
